Mrs. Lach lives alone with the fear of illness - Photo: HN
Growing up in a large, poor family, Mrs. Lach had to drop out of school early to make a living. She had happy days with her family when she married a gentle, hard-working man. Although they were financially difficult during that time, the couple was healthy and always encouraged each other to work and save for when they got sick. But then, disaster struck when her husband died early from a serious illness. Facing the pain of losing her husband, combined with hard work and inadequate nutrition, Mrs. Lach was constantly sick and her bones and joints seriously degenerated.
However, she still tries to work to support herself. “In the summer, I go to the Hieu River to catch mussels and snails and then sell them at the market. In the rainy season, I do whatever people ask me to do. In recent years, my health has become increasingly poor, so even if people hire me, I can’t do much. Thanks to the neighbors who give me fish and vegetables, I have enough food to eat every day,” Ms. Lach sadly recounted.
During the conversation with us, Mrs. Lach sometimes remembered, sometimes forgot because her mind was no longer clear. In recent years, although she felt her health gradually deteriorating, her limbs were shaking, and she had difficulty walking, she did not know what disease she had because she did not dare to go to the doctor. About 2 years ago, she had a headache, she tried to go out to the yard to call her neighbors but before she could, she felt dizzy and fainted. Thanks to the neighbors who discovered her in time and took her to their house to take care of her, she survived the critical period. However, since then, Mrs. Lach's voice has become slurred and her body has become increasingly weak. Knowing about Mrs. Lach's situation, local officials and people often come and help.
“Mrs. Lach’s situation is very pitiful because she is old, lives alone and is no longer able to work. Identifying her as a lonely, poor and seriously ill elderly person, the local government has always cared for her and supported her with gifts; introduced benefactors to give gifts on holidays and Tet... However, the fear of illness still weighs heavily on Mrs. Lach’s old age. Her life now depends entirely on the support of others,” said Ms. Su Thi Nhung, a cultural and social officer of the People’s Committee of Ward 4, Dong Ha City.
