The Future of Art Before Artificial Intelligence

The emergence of art synthesized by artificial intelligence (AI) has divided the community into two trends: one side expressing excitement about the diverse possibilities that AI brings, the other side worrying about the role of traditional artists.

Today, with just a few keywords, AI will synthesize data and process every step to create paintings with surprising visual effects. The confusion at the appearance of AI takes us back to a similar situation in the second half of the 19th century. When photography appeared, allowing real-life images to be recorded, people began to argue about the status of traditional artists.

With every new technology, there is a fear that it will take away the role of artists. However, in terms of art, the limitation of AI lies in the fact that the visual effects it brings are a remix of countless existing styles. This leads to copyright challenges, when AI mixes many references without ensuring transparency about the source. In an article for Artnet magazine, digital artist Greg Rutkowski said that his work has been assigned to thousands of different AI images, he argued that AI should not be allowed to reference the works of living artists to ensure copyright respect.

In fact, AI has intervened in literary life through search algorithms of Google, Facebook... to learn the reading habits and interests of users to provide suggestions for suitable works. However, few people think that one day, inanimate machines can write. On August 25, Parambook Publishing House released the first novel written by Korean artificial intelligence - The world from now on, authored by AI Birampung. Writer and computer science expert Kim Tae Yeon directly controlled Birampung to write this novel. Before that, the writer outlined the plot, setting and characters of the book. According to the founders, Birampung not only understands and expresses dry sentences but also has literary metaphors and implications in the sentences. The sentences written by Birampung are tricky, complex enough and almost do not need proofreading.

As artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, human fears of an AI-dominated future grow. Every small advance in AI raises concerns that machines will take the jobs of artists, or that AI-generated deepfakes will distort the sense of reality.

There is a lot of skepticism about AI in the art world . Last September, an AI-generated artwork won first prize at the Colorado State Fair, prompting a backlash from artists and critics alike. Despite her concerns and frustrations, musician and experimental artist Holly Herndon has a different take: she doesn’t think AI is evil or will destroy art. She believes AI technology is here to stay, and we’ll have to find a way to live with it. “I think the best way forward is for artists to support the development of machine learning and think about how they can invite others to live with AI,” she told Business Insider.

In 2021, Herndon launched a project called Holly+, which allows artists to create music using an AI-generated voice that mimics the artist’s voice. The works created with Holly+ are essentially deepfakes of Herndon’s voice. Herndon’s use of AI to create opens the way forward, not just for artists, but for many others. Instead of rejecting new technology, everyone can learn to use these tools to make our lives easier, or open up new creative paths.
