But being on the biggest stage on the planet certainly brings many benefits.
Travel a day, learn a basket of wisdom
Vietnam women's team learned valuable lessons at the 2023 World Cup.
After the 0-2 loss to Portugal, many Vietnamese fans passed around a photo showing four analysts from the opposing team sitting in the stands with all kinds of modern equipment.
They analyzed every event on the field and communicated it to coach Neto and the coaching staff. Perhaps thanks to that, the European representative played leisurely but still got what they needed: two goals and 3 full points.
Vietnamese fans were not really satisfied with the performance of the girls in red, but it must be admitted that the opponent had prepared very carefully, not only in terms of expertise. This is also a big lesson for Vietnamese women's football, going to the big field, just having enthusiasm is not enough.
Looking back at the two recent losses, it is clear that the Vietnamese women’s team still has much to improve. According to Mr. Tran Anh Tu, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), there are two tasks that need to be done immediately.
“One is to improve the physical foundation, so that our players can play at high intensity continuously for 90 minutes. Two is to improve basic training ability. We see that Portugal is participating in the World Cup for the first time like Vietnam, but their players have excellent techniques and skills.
From receiving the ball, handling, and passing, everything was decisive and effective. Overall, although they lost, the Vietnamese women's team really knows where they stand compared to the world level," Mr. Tu analyzed.
According to the schedule, today (August 1), the Vietnamese women's team will have a match with the Netherlands in the final round of the group stage. It will probably be difficult for Huynh Nhu and her teammates to create a surprise because the opponent is too superior.
However, commentator Vu Quang Huy said that coach Mai Duc Chung and his team still have to play their best because it is not easy to have the opportunity to face the world's top teams.
“A day of travel, a basket of knowledge and with the 2023 World Cup, the Vietnamese women's team has really learned a lot. In particular, the World Cup has shown us where we stand, we need to make a lot of effort if we want to return to this playground and do more. I think losing is not sad because it was all predicted. The important thing is whether this tournament will really become a boost for Vietnamese women's football or not," Mr. Huy assessed.
Make women's football an attractive sport
Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, founder of VietGoal Youth Football Training Center, expressed optimism about the World Cup effect: “Vietnamese women's football will certainly receive more attention, including from investors. Girls who are passionate about football will have more motivation to pursue their dreams, thereby creating more abundant input. VFF itself must also have a specific plan to strive to at least maintain current achievements, thereby creating motivation for the domestic tournament system.”
According to Mr. Tran Anh Tu, Vietnamese women's football will of course have a boost after the World Cup, but the specifics still need time to answer: "Before the women's team, the Vietnamese futsal team attended the World Cup twice, even passed the group stage but only received temporary attention, then everything sank. The futsal movement has developed in recent years, but to say it has made a breakthrough is forced. The story of women's football is the same."
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam emphasized that to increase the appeal of women's football, the media is the first thing to do. Only strong media can push Vietnamese women's football to new heights, making women's football a popular sport with audiences and stories.
By doing this, investors will feel that they are making a profit by investing in women's football. In addition, tournaments also need to be of good quality and have good income to attract people who are capable of practicing and playing football.
Regarding the above issue, Mr. Tran Anh Tu affirmed that in recent times, VFF has always paid attention to media work for women's football, including the national team. Even during this World Cup, the number of Vietnamese reporters working was very limited, but the image of the team was still continuously transmitted on domestic media.
“I think that this is not just a media story, but also requires cooperation and determination in each locality and the whole society. The current women's football clubs are all managed by local authorities. If local leaders pay more attention, I believe that women's football will have a better position.
Developing more football teams in some potential localities also needs to be considered because the number of women's football clubs is currently quite limited. If we want to develop in depth, we first need to develop in breadth," Mr. Tu added.
