This year's university entrance exam has many important changes, especially with the cancellation of early admission, causing many candidates and parents to worry. They wonder how the benchmark scores will change and how they should arrange their wishes?
However, admissions experts believe that if candidates clearly understand the principles and strategies for registering their wishes, fluctuations in benchmark scores are no longer a big concern.
The decisive lever
According to experts, the 2025 university entrance exam places higher demands on candidates’ strategic thinking. The fact that each major has only one common benchmark for all admission methods, eliminating early admission, and increasing the role of percentiles is changing the admission landscape.
In that context, the way of registering and arranging wishes is no longer an administrative operation but becomes a lever to decide the actual possibility of admission.
MSc. Phung Quan, admissions expert at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) analyzed: "In the context of major changes in admissions, registering wishes is no longer a technical operation but a strategic decision.
Systemic understanding, data analysis thinking and accurate prediction ability are the keys to help candidates not only pass the entrance exam but also get into the right major, the right school, and the right capacity and future orientation."
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry - also affirmed that registering wishes is an important and decisive step in university admission.
"The admission score may fluctuate every year, but if candidates have a reasonable strategy for allocating their wishes, clearly understand the order of priority and are not influenced by crowd psychology, the chance of being admitted will be high.
Instead of worrying about whether the benchmark score will increase or decrease, candidates should proactively research information carefully and calculate how to arrange their studies to suit their abilities and interests. That is the key to opening the door to university success," Mr. Nhan emphasized.
Principle of stratification
Mr. Quan noted that it is necessary to firmly grasp the admission principle this year: all wishes are considered simultaneously on the common system, the virtual filtering software only records the highest wish for which the candidate is eligible to be admitted.
Therefore, the order of wishes reflects personal priority, and should absolutely not be arranged based on "easy to pass" or predicted benchmark scores. It is necessary to register selectively, avoiding "wish interference". Although the number of wishes is unlimited, avoid registering indiscriminately and without strategy, which will lose focus and make the selection process less effective.
Master Cu Xuan Tien, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that with the expected reduction in admission scores, candidates can refer to the method of arranging their admission wishes according to the stratification principle. A smart strategy for arranging wishes can be divided into three groups:
Level 1 (dream group): set 3-5 wishes for the major/school you like the most, with the 2024 benchmark score 1-3 points higher than the current score (the candidate's achieved score).
Level 2 (moderate group): place 3-5 wishes on your favorite majors/schools with high chances of admission, with previous year's benchmark score equal to or 0-1 point higher than current score.
Level 3 (safe group): place 3-5 wishes on your favorite majors with almost certain chances of being admitted, with last year's benchmark score 0-1 point lower than the current score.
"The wishes must be arranged in order of priority from high to low, in which wish 1 is the highest wish. If you are admitted to a higher wish, the following wishes will be automatically canceled. Therefore, the most favorite wish should be placed in the number 1 position to have a higher or lower chance of being admitted" - Mr. Tien emphasized.
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Anh - Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology - also advised candidates not to "strategically" arrange the major with the lowest score at the top to "surely pass", because they may be admitted to an unwanted major and have no chance to consider other wishes.
"This year, universities will only consider admission according to the time specified by the Ministry of Education and Training. Since there is no longer early admission, to increase the chance of being admitted to the schools of their choice, candidates need to apply to many schools with the majors they love to ensure the highest chance of being admitted."
Mistakes to Avoid
MSc. Le Van Hien - Head of the University Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law - warned candidates about mistakes to avoid when arranging admission wishes, specifically:
Candidates who have passed the direct admission exam of the Ministry of Education and Training but subjectively forgot to register their wishes on the Ministry's general admission system, leading to failure in university entrance exam. Candidates who have registered their wishes on the Ministry's system but forgot to pay the admission fee (considered as not successfully registered).
Candidates forget to declare and update the information to prove their admission as required by universities. Candidates do not thoroughly research the profession and school they want to study, but register their wishes based on the recommendations of friends and "content creators" who are not familiar with the profession on social networks.
"Entering the wrong major or school code is a serious mistake that can make your application invalid even if you have enough points to pass, so candidates need to carefully check and compare the information in each school's admission plan. In addition, when registering your application, candidates need to find out the tuition fee level, considering their family's financial situation and their own health," Mr. Hien advised.
Take it easy, take your time.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - advised candidates to stay calm, not to be hasty or emotional. Candidates should also note that the Ministry of Education and Training's admission registration system does not distinguish between admission methods, so they only need to register for the school and major they want, the system will automatically use the method of the candidate with the highest score for admission.
University and college admission selection day 2025
In order to support candidates in choosing their admission wishes, Tuoi Tre newspaper coordinated with the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) to organize two festivals to choose university and college admission wishes in 2025 simultaneously in Ho Chi Minh City (University of Technology, 268 Ly Thuong Kiet, Dien Hong Ward), and Hanoi (Hanoi University of Technology).
With the support of Vingroup Corporation, the festival took place on July 19, with the participation of experts from the Ministry of Education and Training, universities, and experienced career counselors. All questions from parents and candidates about registering for admission and information related to admission will be thoroughly answered by experts.
Hundreds of direct consulting booths from universities, colleges, vocational schools and study abroad consulting units with a strong consulting team are also present in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to answer all questions about enrollment for candidates.
