University Admissions 2025: Approaching admission subject combinations in a new context

In the new context, the labor market requires learners to have interdisciplinary thinking to work effectively, so universities have also designed interdisciplinary training programs.

Not to mention the 2018 GeneralEducation Program is also different from before. That raises the question of whether university admissions need to keep the traditional combinations?

In recent years, some universities with majors in social sciences and humanities have identified many subject combinations for admission, including the traditional C00 combination.

Especially in 2025, when for the first time candidates take the graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, the Ministry of Education and Training will no longer limit the number of subject combinations, so adding or removing admission combinations to suit their training orientation has been included in many schools' admission plans.

Grade 12 students participate in the career orientation activity “One hour as a law student”. Currently, not many schools recruit the C00 combination but have expanded to many other combinations.

Up to now, majors in social sciences such as law, public relations, multimedia, library information, tourism , Vietnamese studies, psychology... when considering admissions have been considered to have the C00 combination consisting of 3 subjects: literature, history, and geography. However, some schools have changed this view.

If in 2024, the tourism and Vietnamese studies majors of Saigon University still considered the C00 combination, this year it will no longer be the same, but will be combinations such as literature, math, history or literature, math, geography or literature, math, economic and legal education...

Other social sciences such as law, psychology, education management... also have changes. If in 2024, the law major considered 2 combinations of literature, math, English and literature, math, history; psychology major considered literature, math, English, then this year it has expanded to many combinations, including literature, math and the remaining subject is one of the high school graduation exam subjects, ensuring that the subjects in the combination do not overlap; library information major includes literature and 2 subjects in the remaining subjects. Other majors also expand their combinations according to this method.

In 2025, the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) plans to use 6 combinations applicable to all majors, majors and training methods. In which, the law and economic law majors will consider combinations A00, A01, D01, D07 (math, English, chemistry), X26 (math, English, information technology), X25 (math, English, economic education and law). This means that there will also be changes, adding new subjects to the admission combination.

Before 2022, the law department of Nha Trang University had considered admission group C00, but from 2023, the school removed this group. This year, the school considered the following groups: math, literature, English; math, literature, economic education - law; math, literature, history; math, literature, geography. Similarly, tourism majors such as travel and tourism service management, hotel management also changed their groups and no longer considered literature, history, and geography.

The Law Department of An Giang University in 2024 will still consider block C00, but this year it will use the following combinations: math, physics, English; math, literature, English; math, chemistry, English; math, English, economic education - law and math, English, geography; no longer C00.

In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance will no longer consider the C00 combination for social sciences as in 2024, expanding it to the following combinations: C01 (literature, mathematics, physics), C03 (literature, mathematics, history), C04 (literature, mathematics, geography), D01, X01 (literature, mathematics, economic and legal education), X02 (literature, mathematics, information technology). In 2025, FPT University will use a combination of mathematics and any 2 subjects to consider admission to all majors.

IS TRADITIONAL RECRUITMENT NO LONGER SUITABLE?

Sharing about this issue, Dr. Quach Hoai Nam, Vice Principal in charge of Nha Trang University, said: "Basically, not only C00 but also the traditional admission approach of 3 subjects needs to be reviewed."

According to Dr. Nam, with the old high school program, the story is not much of a problem because students have studied all the subjects in high school, regardless of which block the universities select, which is understood as a criterion for selecting PhDs, not a condition for PhDs to be able to study at university.

"With the new general education program, if only based on the admission block, even if it is considered appropriate, there is still a possibility that the student is not qualified to study at university if in high school the student does not study another necessary subject for the major. In the case of still using transcripts or exam scores for university admission, the admission subject combination must be broader, with more subjects, to be rigorous. Of course, there are training majors that may only require 3 subjects," Mr. Nam commented.

Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, Director of the Information and Communication Center of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, also said that changing the combination to suit the new context not only meets the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, but also ensures the connection between social science knowledge and logical thinking, an important foundation associated with the school's training majors.
