In the first half, the Vietnamese team started well, controlled the ball and created more opportunities. The central midfielder pair Nguyen Thai Son - Nguyen Tuan Anh did a good job of recovering and circulating the ball, supporting each other well even though this was the first time they played together. In addition, Nguyen Quang Hai also actively dropped back to join the attack.
The main attacking direction of the Vietnamese team is the left wing, where Doan Van Hau often moves up. This defender has some quality crosses, creating conditions for Nguyen Van Tung to finish.
The most dangerous chance for the Vietnamese team came at the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, after Cong Phuong's corner kick, Van Hau headed the ball inside but no Vietnamese player could finish. Coach Troussier's students had quite a variety of set-piece situations.

In the beginning of the second half, the Vietnamese team continuously applied pressure, creating many dangerous shots. In the 48th minute, one of the opportunities was converted into a goal when Tuan Hai, who was brought on to replace Cong Phuong, fired a dangerous shot from outside the penalty area, opening the score for the Vietnamese team.
After the goal, Coach Troussier made some personnel adjustments. He brought in Khuat Van Khang, Hoang Van Toan, Nguyen Van Toan to replace Doan Van Hau, Nguyen Van Tung, Nguyen Tuan Anh.
In the last 30 minutes of the match, the Vietnamese team had 5 U23 players. However, coach Troussier's team still completely dominated the game. The young central midfielder duo Van Toan - Thai Son played extremely confidently, helping the whole team stand firm against Syria's efforts to rise up.
At the end of the match, the Vietnamese team had another dangerous opportunity when Van Khang crossed the ball for Van Toan to finish. However, due to the large number of Syrian defenders blocking the way, Coach Troussier's players could not score another goal.
In the end, the Vietnamese team won 1-0. Coach Troussier had a smooth first two matches in his debut for the national team. Before that, he and his students defeated Hong Kong (China) 1-0.
