On May 23, US President Donald Trump proposed imposing a 50% tariff on goods imported from the European Union (EU) starting June 1. This move caused a wave of USD sell-off, causing the currency to fall 1% against the Japanese yen, to 142.48 yen/USD. For the week, the USD fell 2.2% against the yen, marking the largest weekly decline since early April 2025.
However, the USD recovered slightly at the end of the week, thanks to positive signals from the trade negotiation process between the US and China. The US Dollar Index rose slightly above 100.6 points, showing investors' optimism about the possibility of reaching a trade agreement between the world's two largest economies .
Despite the volatility during the week, the USD is still on track for its first monthly gain against the Japanese Yen since early 2025, indicating a recovery in the USD after earlier downward pressure.
The volatility in the US dollar has affected Asian currencies. Many currencies such as the Korean won, Malaysian ringgit and Thai baht all rose sharply on Friday, with some rising more than 1%. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (China) intervened in the market by buying $6 billion to prevent the local currency from rising.

In the domestic market, at the beginning of the trading session on June 1, the State Bank announced the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong at 24,978 VND.
