USD exchange rate today May 23, 2025 on the world market
The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 100.01 - up 0.52 points compared to May 22, 2025.

Helen Given, trading director at Monex USA (Washington), commented: “The USD is up slightly today, but market sentiment is still very fragile. The fluctuations in the last few sessions have been very cautious. The passage of the Trump administration's tax and spending bill is helping the USD to inch up a bit, but most of the money flows today are due to the reversal of previous USD short positions."
In late morning trading in the US, the USD rose slightly by 0.1% to 143.75 Japanese yen, after falling to 142.80 - its lowest level since May 7. Positive data on the US labor market also supported the greenback, with the number of weekly unemployment claims falling slightly, indicating that the job market remains stable.
Initial jobless claims fell 2,000 to 227,000 in the week ended May 17, below economists' forecasts in a Reuters poll of 230,000.
U.S. Treasurys lost steam as a 20-year bond sale on Wednesday underperformed, reinforcing the “sell America” trend and weighing on the dollar overnight. The weak auction also weighed on Wall Street, which was already feeling the pinch after Moody’s downgraded the U.S.’s AAA sovereign credit rating last week.
Meanwhile, the euro fell 0.3 percent against the dollar to $1.1293, after rising for three consecutive sessions. The preliminary composite PMI released by the HCOB showed that business activity in the eurozone unexpectedly contracted this month.
“This weak data signals a dim near-term economic outlook for Europe, as the impact of Trump’s tariffs is slowly being felt and a trade deal remains a long way off,” said Harry Woolman, head of global markets at Validus Risk Management.
The pound edged up 0.1% to $1.3434, hovering near a three-year peak hit on Wednesday, after higher-than-expected inflation dampened expectations of a Bank of England (BoE) interest rate cut.
