USD exchange rate today (August 6): USD maintains recovery momentum

USD exchange rate today: Early morning of August 6, the State Bank announced the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong to the USD decreased, currently at 25,219 VND.

Meanwhile, in the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) decreased by 0.03%, currently at 98.76.

USD exchange rate today in the world

The US dollar rose on Tuesday, but remained near Friday’s lows, as markets continued to correct after a weak jobs report raised expectations the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates next month.

Investors also focused on President Donald Trump's nominations to the Fed's Board of Governors, including his pick to be commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

“The market is in a correction phase right now after the jobs data, and the Fed is in no rush to cut rates, and there are no clear signs of inflation,” said Eugene Epstein, head of trading and structured products for North America at Moneycorp in New Jersey. “So we’re in a bit of a limbo between now and next week’s CPI data. And the dollar is adjusting… waiting for that data.”

In addition to economic data, markets are also watching for personnel changes at the Fed, which could turn the agency more “dovish,” in line with President Trump’s views.

President Trump said Tuesday that he will soon announce an interim replacement for Fed Governor Adriana Kugler, who resigned last Friday, as well as a nominee for the next Fed chair. He ruled out Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as a candidate to replace current Chairman Jerome Powell, whose term expires in May 2026. Trump said Bessent wants to stay in his current position, and the White House is considering four candidates to replace Powell.

“Kugler’s replacement is likely to be dovish on interest rates, which means the US dollar could weaken in the future,” said Mr Epstein from Moneycorp.

In addition to Kugler’s departure, Trump also fired BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday after data showed weaker-than-expected job growth in July and a sharp downward revision to the previous two months. He said he would announce a replacement within three to four days.

In afternoon trading on Tuesday, the euro was almost unchanged against the dollar, currently at $1.1569.

In other currency pairs, the dollar rose 0.4% to 147.66 yen, after minutes of the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) June policy meeting showed some members said the BOJ would consider raising interest rates again if trade tensions eased.

The Swiss franc edged down on the day to CHF0.8077/USD, after falling 0.5% in the previous session.

But the focus remains on tariff uncertainty, after new duties imposed by Mr Trump last week on imports from dozens of countries raised concerns about the health of the global economy. Switzerland is seeking to make a “more attractive offer” in trade talks with Washington to avoid a 39% US import tax on Swiss goods that threatens its export-oriented economy.
