On February 17, xAI - the artificial intelligence (AI) company of billionaire Elon Musk revealed the latest version of the Grok chatbot, hoping to make a significant impact in the AI field with this new release.
Grok 3 is built to understand the nature of the universe and provide the ultimate truth, according to Mr. Musk. Grok 3 is “frighteningly smart,” with 10 times the computing power of its predecessor.
This version is trained on synthetic data and incorporates self-correction mechanisms to avoid errors, also known as “hallucinations.” Mr. Musk assessed that Grok 3 will be a chatbot superior to any other AI model currently on the market.
Grok 3 will initially be available to subscribers of the Premium+ paid plan of Platform X, the company Musk acquired in 2022, before expanding to a wider audience.
Grok 3 is expected to become a formidable competitor in the rapidly growing AI market. Recently, Chinese startup DeepSeek also made waves when it "launched" the R1 chatbot with low price and high quality, challenging the US dominance in this field.
The new chatbot will also compete directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but left the company's board in 2018 to focus on developing electric car maker Tesla and space exploration company SpaceX. Since then, Musk's relationship with his former company has soured, with recent tensions related to his attempt to buy OpenAI for nearly $100 billion.
Musk’s role in the Trump administration has also raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. He has become a key adviser to the president, particularly on AI regulations, and is also the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is reforming the country’s bureaucracy. Critics say Musk’s involvement in AI policy could give him an unfair advantage, given his significant commercial interests in the field.
Furthermore, xAI is reportedly seeking a $10 billion funding round, potentially valuing the company at $75 billion. xAI was founded in July 2023, shortly after Mr. Musk signed an open letter advocating a moratorium on the development of powerful AI models.
