The 2024 AFC U23 Championship Finals will take place in Qatar from April 15 to May 3, 2024, with the participation of 16 teams divided into 4 seeded groups to be drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each. The teams will compete in the group stage once, with the top 2 teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
U23 Vietnam passed the qualifying round with an unbeaten record
According to AFC, the top 3 teams will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, while the 4th-place team (losing in the 3rd-place match) will play a play-off with Guinea, a representative from Africa, to compete for the remaining ticket.
The Vietnam U23 team is seeded in Pot 2 along with Australia, South Korea and Iraq. As the host country, Qatar is seeded in Pot 1 along with Saudi Arabia (the defending champion), Uzbekistan and Japan. The other three representatives from Southeast Asia participating in the finals are Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, with Thailand in Pot 3 and Malaysia and Indonesia (appearing for the first time) in Pot 4.
By being placed in the second seed group, U23 Vietnam will have an advantage in the draw and group division, thereby avoiding meeting strong teams from the group stage.
Seed groups at the tournament
This is also the 5th consecutive time since 2016 that the Vietnam U23 team has won the right to participate in the AFC U23 Championship, with the best achievement being the runner-up position at the 2018 tournament in Changzhou (China).
Vietnam U23 won a ticket to the 2024 AFC U23 Championship Finals as the top team in Group C with 7 points in the qualifying round held in Phu Tho in September. Accordingly, coach Philippe Troussier's team defeated Guam (6-0), Yemen (1-0) before drawing Singapore (2-2) in a match that was just a formality because they had already secured the top spot.
