Applying science and technology to improve the production efficiency of F1 AD070 hybrid watermelon in Hai Phong

The F1 AD070 hybrid watermelon production model was deployed on a scale of 22 hectares in three localities including Dai Son, Tran Phu and Kim Thanh communes. These are areas with favorable natural conditions, people with experience in vegetable production and ready to accept new technical advances.

During the implementation process, nearly 200 households registered to participate in the model, fully meeting the requirements on scale and investment counterpart. Households were instructed on planting and caring for AD070 watermelon varieties through 03 training courses. The training content focused on the technical process of planting, caring, pest control and seed quality management. Thereby, farmers were raised awareness of concentrated commodity production, mastered modern farming techniques, contributing to the formation of high-quality watermelon growing areas.

AD070 watermelon variety is evaluated to be suitable for local climate and soil conditions, has good resistance, stable yield and fruit quality meeting market requirements.

Production is carried out in two seasons: spring-summer (sowing from March 8-15) and autumn-winter (first sowing from August 1-10, second sowing from August 15-20). Monitoring results at model sites show that the F1 AD070 hybrid watermelon variety grows and develops well, with a germination rate of over 95%, and the seedlings are strong, hard, and uniform. The average time from planting to harvest is 58-60 days, and the plants have a "good" growth rate. Economic efficiency analysis shows that in the spring-summer crop, the average yield is 1,500 kg/sao, the selling price is 8,000 VND/kg, giving a profit of 9,200,000 VND/sao; while in the autumn-winter crop, the average yield is 1,400 kg/sao, the selling price is 9,000 VND/kg, giving a profit of 8,500,000 VND/sao. This is a high profit level, contributing to increasing income and encouraging farmers to expand the area of commercial melon cultivation.

Through the implementation process, the F1 AD070 hybrid watermelon production model has fully implemented the contents and scale according to the approved description, ensuring the right progress and achieving the set goals. The AD070 watermelon variety is assessed to be suitable for the local climate and soil conditions, has good resistance, stable yield and fruit quality that meets market requirements.

At the evaluation conference, representatives of the Hai Phong Center for Innovation and Application of Science and Technology and other localities unanimously agreed that the model has demonstrated the effectiveness, adaptability and replication potential of the F1 AD070 hybrid watermelon variety in concentrated commodity production. In addition, the transfer of technical advances also helps improve the capacity of grassroots technical staff and form a mindset for agricultural production applying technology.

The F1 AD070 hybrid watermelon production model initially showed positive results, contributing to improving economic efficiency for farmers and affirming the practical role of science and technology in supporting agricultural development in Hai Phong city, aiming at the goal of improving productivity, quality and sustainable development for local agriculture and the Red River Delta.
