Reporter (PV): What role does science and technology play in the development of physical education and sports , sir?

Dr. Vu Thai Hong: The development of science and technology has a strong impact on the field of physical education and sports, contributing to maximizing the physical and mental potential of athletes to achieve high achievements in competition. In that context, the sports of all countries must be proactive and have early orientation to have solid progress. Each country that wants to have a developed sports industry needs to have synchronous solutions, promote the application of achievements of the technological revolution from athlete training, coaching to competition, and organize important tournaments at home and abroad. In recent years, the achievements of Vietnamese sports have been constantly improved in the international arena thanks to the great contribution of science and technology. However, for science and technology to become essential, creating the driving force to raise the level and further improve the achievements of Vietnamese sports, a long-term and methodical plan is needed.

PV: What issues is the Institute of Sports Science and Technology researching and applying, sir?

Dr. Vu Thai Hong: The Institute of Sports Science and Technology (under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations) has the function of research and scientific services, applied to sports such as: Nutrition, training methods, sports economics ; transferring science and technology in high-performance sports and contributing to improving stature and community health...

Currently, we are coordinating with universities and high schools across the country to conduct physical assessments for students to include in national data. This is a huge amount of work to help orient the ability of each student to participate in sports, discover talents, and prepare for training human resources for Vietnamese sports in the future. The Institute is in the process of opening two community centers in Ho Chi Minh City with the mission of developing capacity and equipping skills for students through movement and games. If effective, we will expand the model nationwide to contribute to creating a useful playground for students.

PV: In your opinion, what should we do to apply science and technology to improve the physical strength and stature of Vietnamese people?

Dr. Vu Thai Hong: First of all, we need to promote school sports. For many years, school sports have had many shortcomings: Lack of teachers specializing in sports, limited physical training facilities. It is a fact that many schools today have little environment for students to participate in extracurricular activities, many students are still facing too much pressure from studying, exams...

I have witnessed many models of applying science and technology to school sports with high efficiency in countries such as Japan, China, Singapore... They have introduced sports training models for students right from kindergarten. They use technical means to assess body index to see which sport is suitable for each student, thereby orienting the training of sports human resources. One of the important goals set by the Institute of Sports Science and Technology is: Building models for students to participate in experiencing sports activities. This is both an opportunity for students to exercise to improve their physical strength and stature, and an opportunity for scouts to select future talents for Vietnam's national sports teams.
