The State Council of Professors has just announced the list of candidates proposed by the Basic Council of Professors to be considered for recognition of meeting the standards for the title of professor and associate professor in 2025.
Among the 21 candidates for the Pharmacy major, at the age of 43, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi is the youngest professor candidate.

149 scientific articles, 11 patents
Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung is a scientist with a large and impressive research record. Up to now, he has published 149 scientific articles, of which 49 are in prestigious international journals.
In particular, he has been granted 11 patents for inventions and utility solutions. Many of these patents focus on creating supportive treatment preparations, with the noble goal of reducing treatment costs for patients.
The two main research directions of Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thanh Tung are: Research on evaluating the effects, mechanisms of action and toxicity at the molecular level of medicinal herbs and natural compounds; and Research on virtual screening of compounds with pharmacological effects, pharmacokinetic characteristics and low toxicity to develop drugs from nature.
In addition to articles and inventions, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung is also the head of 3 basic-level scientific research projects, 2 projects at the Hanoi National University level and 1 project of the Asian Research Support Center, Hanoi National University. He is also the author of 1 textbook, 1 monograph of the Hanoi National University Publishing House, 2 reference books of prestigious international publishers (Apple Academic Press Inc. and CRC Pres) and 17 book chapters of prestigious publishers (IGI Global, Wiley, Elsevier...).
Passion for research linked to practice, reducing costs for patients
Born on May 2, 1982 in Yen Quang, Y Yen, Nam Dinh (old), Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thanh Tung began his academic career with a bachelor's degree in Pharmacy at the Institute of Pharmacy and Food, University of La Habana (Cuba, 2007). He then received a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Materials from Chosun University (Korea, 2011) and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Sevilla (Spain, 2014).
His teaching and research career started as a researcher at the Central Institute for Drug Control, then worked at Traphaco Company (Hanoi). Since coming to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, VNU, he has been involved in teaching and research and is currently the Deputy Head of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
In 2018, he was appointed Associate Professor of Pharmacy. In the same year, he received the VNU Award for Science and Technology. In 2024, he continued to be awarded the VNU Teacher of the Year Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions in research and teaching.
For many years, he has continuously achieved the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level (2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2018-2019, 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2023-2024) and Emulation Fighter at the VNU level (2018-2019, 2021-2022). From 2021 to 2024, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the President of VNU for his outstanding scientific publications.
Dr. Bui Thanh Tung devotes much effort to research closely related to practice, aiming at reducing treatment costs for patients.
Some of his 11 patents include: "Process for producing extract products to support memory enhancement", "Process for producing a mixture of bitter tea and bitter melon extracts to treat diabetes", "Process for producing extract products to treat colitis", "Process for preparing a mixture of extracts from the plant No ngay dat and Day gam used to treat gout", and especially "Process for producing a mixture of extracts from Mimosa pudica leaves, Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaves and Lotus leaves used to treat dyslipidemia and diabetes".
In particular, the study combining Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Making) leaves and Lotus leaves has opened up opportunities for treating diabetes at low cost, thanks to extracts from medicinal herbs such as Mimosa pudica, Gynostemma pentaphyllum and Lotus which are cheap and have few side effects.
The special thing is that the materials used in the project are common, easy to access, and not expensive. This not only facilitates research but also encourages many students to participate, thereby forming new directions in exploiting natural medicinal materials.
Sharing the reason for the implementation, Dr. Bui Thanh Tung said: currently, medicinal herbs are widely used in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, but the combination of many medicinal herbs in the same mixture to increase effectiveness has not received due attention. Meanwhile, medical literature has clearly recorded the effects of each type of plant such as Mimosa, Gynostemma, Lotus as well as many other medicinal herbs.
“These are medicinal plants that are available in nature and easy to grow. When applied with modern pharmaceutical production technology, they can produce convenient products that maximize their effectiveness and help reduce treatment costs for patients,” he shared.
In addition to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung, the list of candidates for the position of Professor of Pharmacy in 2025 also includes Associate Professor Dr. Do Thi Ha (born in 1976), Deputy Director of the Institute of Medicinal Materials - Ministry of Health and Associate Professor Dr. Tran Viet Hung (born in 1972), Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Drug Testing.
In 2024, the Pharmacy industry recorded 9 candidates meeting the standards for the title of Associate Professor, but no candidate was appointed Professor.
