Typhoon Matmo approaches, China raises warning to highest level

China's National Meteorological Center has raised its typhoon alert to red - the most serious on a four-tier scale - as Typhoon Matmo approaches.

According to Xinhua News Agency, on the evening of October 4, the National Meteorological Center of China raised the storm warning level to red - the most serious level on a four-level scale - as Typhoon Matmo approached the coast of Guangdong and Hainan provinces, expected to make landfall in the country around noon on October 5.

Hainan Provincial Meteorological Station said that at 6 p.m. on October 4, the center of storm Matmo was located about 400 kilometers southeast of Wenchang City in Hainan, with winds of up to 35 meters per second near the center of the storm.

China's National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has raised the flood and typhoon emergency warnings in Guangdong and Hainan to level III, and maintained the flood emergency warning in Guangxi at level IV. Hainan authorities raised the typhoon emergency warning to level I - the highest warning level - at 7 p.m. on October 4.

Hainan Provincial Meteorological Station warned that Wenchang City, Haikou City and Chengmei County would be affected by the storm from the morning of October 5.

Hainan's transport authority said all rail services on the island will be suspended on October 5. The island's high-speed rail network is expected to resume operations on October 6.

Typhoon Matmo is also expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to northern Hainan Island from the night of October 4 to October 5.

In Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, all 25 A-class tourist attractions and three beaches have been temporarily closed to ensure the safety of visitors. The city has also canceled more than 200 entertainment and sports activities scheduled from October 4 to October 6.
