People in Ta Han ask to escape poverty

One year after the YAGI storm, Ta Han village, Nam Cuong commune, is gradually taking on a new look. In this journey of change, there are two shining examples: Mr. Vu A Ngai, Village Chief, and Mr. Giang A Tru, Village Party Cell Secretary, who have made efforts to escape poverty with their own hands to set an example for other households in the village to follow.

Volunteering to escape poverty is a familiar phrase in documents, but it is far away in many mountainous residential areas. Because being out of the poverty category will no longer benefit from preferential policies. However, overcoming that thought, two leaders of Ta Han village wrote a petition to escape poverty as an example for the villagers.

“I am writing this application with the reason of voluntarily escaping poverty. Although my family still has many difficulties such as difficult roads and traffic, I feel that I need to contribute a little bit of my health to help my village and commune develop more and more beautifully, so I and my family voluntarily escape poverty. I hope the Commune People's Committee will approve it. Thank you.” - Those are the words we read in the application for poverty alleviation from Ta Han Village Chief Vu A Ngai. The simple words, not elaborately expressed, clearly show the sense of responsibility in the poverty reduction effort in the highlands.

Born and raised in the mountains of Ta Han, Vu A Ngai (born in 1998), a Mong ethnic, understands better than anyone why poverty continues to haunt his people on this land. Like many young people in the highlands, he worked as a hired worker and then exported labor from April 2023 to September 2024.

Right after arriving in a foreign land, Mr. Ngai set a goal for himself: to work hard to earn money, determined to change his family's life after his term ended.

Returning to his hometown, he was elected by the villagers to hold the position of Ta Han Village Chief. To be a pioneer in economic development and sustainable poverty reduction, Mr. Ngai invested all his savings in pig farming, and used about 1,000 square meters of rice fields and corn fields to grow, provide food, and build barns.

Currently, his family's model regularly maintains more than 10 pigs, sells two batches each year, and after deducting expenses, earns tens of millions of dong, an income enough to stabilize life and rotate capital for the next batch.

Just like the Head of Vu A Ngai village, Mr. Giang A Tru, Secretary of the village Party Cell, after returning from working in foreign markets, chose the model of combined farming and livestock farming to develop the economy. His family has 6 members, with 2,500m2 of rice fields and more than 5,000m2 of corn and cassava land, which he makes the most of as a source of food for his herd of over 15 pigs per litter.

With two large batches each year, this closed model helps families have food and create stable income, significantly improving their lives.

The two village leaders each have a different way of doing business, but both have brought about practical results, which is to stabilize their lives and increase their income. And from that, both of them voluntarily wrote a petition to escape poverty. They did not wait until they had enough to escape poverty, but were determined to give their support to families in more difficult circumstances, to set an example for the villagers.

Talking to us about his decision, Mr. Tru said: "If you become a cadre but cannot escape poverty, what will the villagers think?". The statement seems simple, but it is not easy for the Ta Han people, so Mr. Tru's actions have had a significant impact on the thinking of the villagers.

Mr. Tran Duc Trung Thien, Chairman of Nam Cuong Commune People's Committee, said: The fact that the Village Chief and Party Secretary of Ta Han Village voluntarily applied to escape poverty is a very commendable action, demonstrating the pioneering spirit, setting an example to spread the will to rise up in the village and other residential areas of the commune.

Spread the spirit of self-reliance

This spirit of striving to escape poverty is not a one-day or two-day thing in Ta Han, the pioneers are the most important people. If we do not raise awareness for the people, do not help them know how to do business, we cannot escape poverty. But if we want to change the awareness of the people here, we must let them see the reality, see the clear results.

As village leaders, Mr. Ngai and Mr. Tru are always exemplary and pioneers in encouraging people not to cut down forests for farming, not to rely on state subsidies, but to proactively borrow capital, learn techniques to develop production, and escape poverty.

Ta Han currently has 109 households, with 572 people, of which the poverty rate is over 95%. Although economic life is still difficult, the valuable thing is that there have been positive changes in thinking and ways of doing things.

Many households have built new houses themselves, no longer depending on government support programs. Young people have boldly participated in labor export to markets such as Taiwan, Korea, Japan, etc. The Mong people who used to live a closed and self-conscious life now know how to look far ahead, know how to calculate business, and know how to rise up with their own internal strength.

The stories of Vu A Ngai and Giang A Tru are not only examples of the spirit of overcoming difficulties, but also evidence of remarkable changes in the thinking of ethnic minorities in the highlands, especially the Mong people.

While somewhere there are still people "asking to be poor households", in Ta Han there are people asking to escape poverty, not because they have enough, but because they do not want poverty to follow them from generation to generation, they want to change their thinking, change their lives with their own hands and minds.

Poverty reduction requires efforts from many sides, in which, it is important that the poor have determination, strive to escape poverty themselves, eliminate the mindset of waiting and relying on the State, and work with local authorities to promote the emulation movement for economic development, and effectively implement the sustainable poverty reduction program.
