The underground metal detector is this man's "companion".

In early August, Phan Thanh Trinh (41 years old, Da Nang City), currently working at the Sea Tourism Order Management Team, under the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches, became known to many people after helping tourist Lein Riches (Australia) find his diamond ring.   dropped on Cua Dai beach (Hoi An Dong ward).

This action was commended by the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches. Afterwards, the Australian tourist also sent his thanks, along with a picture of his daughter wearing the precious ring: "Thank you Thanh Trinh and your friend for making my family's vacation in Vietnam perfect. He only accepted my kiss."

This is just one of countless times Thanh Trinh has helped tourists find lost items. However, he has never received any reward.

Mr. Trinh and his friend found the Australian tourist's diamond ring at Cua Dai beach on August 1.

Thanh Trinh’s main job is to ensure security and order on the beaches, coordinate rescue and relief in case of emergency. During peak tourist season, working overtime to assist tourists who have lost their children, lost their belongings, or have had an accident is common, even without any allowance. He has been doing this job for 14 years now.

The image of a tanned man carrying an underground metal detector has become familiar. In 2020, he bought this machine himself from abroad. He likes the feeling of treasure hunting, so in his spare time, he carries the machine to scan the sand and dive into the sea. Unexpectedly, this hobby helps many tourists who have lost their belongings.

"After the Covid-19 outbreak, I saw a tourist struggling to find his car keys that had fallen on the sand. I brought the device and searched for an hour before finding them. That was the first time I helped a beachgoer find his belongings using this device. Finding it useful, I told my colleagues and the shops along the beach to contact me if they found any tourists who had dropped their belongings," he said.

The platinum wedding ring was returned to the tourist in Hue on August 10.

Regardless of early morning or late afternoon, when he hears that a tourist has dropped his belongings, Thanh Trinh rushes out with his camera. In mid-September, seeing a tourist post on social media that he had just dropped a necklace in Chan May - Lang Co commune ( Hue city ), he did not hesitate to drive 63 km to look for it. Unfortunately, this was the rare time he could not find it.

In mid-August, a tourist from Hue accidentally dropped her 20-year-old wedding ring at My Khe beach (Da Nang city). When asked, Thanh Trinh immediately showed up with a metal detector. It seemed hopeless, but he found the ring buried deep in the sand after many hours, making the girl extremely happy.

The items he finds for tourists can be a gold necklace worth nearly 100 million VND, an engagement ring or a valuable phone. At the end of June, two female tourists went swimming in front of Lang Ong Park, they put 2 phones in their hats, dug a hole and buried them in the sand. But the waves suddenly hit hard, erasing all traces.

The two girls panicked and asked for help. He and his colleagues immediately searched in the heavy rain. A few hours later, the two phones were found under a thick layer of sand.

A female tourist found a phone in June (striped shirt) and another tourist was happy to receive her lost phone back in February.

According to Thanh Trinh, it is difficult to find lost items at sea. After collecting information from tourists, he has to narrow down the area of lost items based on location, time, and tide. The search can last for hours, even a whole day. Whenever a tourist finds a lost item, he usually takes a photo and posts it on his personal page like a diary.

"Tourists often give me money as a thank you, but I refuse. That's how Da Nang people are. If I help them enthusiastically without receiving anything in return, they will remember and tell their friends about a hospitable and worth-visiting Vietnam. Seeing tourists happy when they find something, receiving hugs and smiles from them, that is priceless motivation," he said.

In the first half of 2025, there were 31 cases of lost property returned by the Da Nang Sea Tourism Order Management Team. Of these, 12 were foreign tourists.
