The United Nations said on June 16 that the two-month conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced more than 1 million children in the country, more than a quarter of them in the Darfur region, which is cut off from all communications and facing a humanitarian disaster.

A statement from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said clashes in Sudan since mid-April have left at least 330 children dead, more than 1,900 injured and more than 1 million displaced.

UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Mandeep O'Brien, said the country's future was at stake as children were caught in the fighting and bearing the brunt of the conflict.

According to UNICEF estimates, more than 13.6 million Sudanese children are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, including 620,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition and half of them could die without timely help.

The agency said it was ready to assist but that the warring parties in Sudan needed to open safe corridors and ensure security for all areas where children needed assistance.

Previously, on June 15, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Martin Griffiths, also called on the world to prevent a "humanitarian disaster" in Darfur, the most fiercely fought area in Sudan today.

To date, clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF forces continue in several areas, including the capital Khartoum, South Kordofan and North Kordofan provinces. The conflict continues to claim many lives and destroy infrastructure and homes.
