On October 12, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Medical Association and the Ministry of Health jointly organized a scientific conference with the theme "Research and application in medicine".
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the conference, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kinh, Vice President of the Vietnam Medical Association, said that previously, some countries had tested and licensed a vaccine to prevent dengue fever, but the effectiveness was not as expected, especially with the D2 virus, which is the most common type of dengue virus today. However, recently, a Japanese dengue vaccine has been tested and has shown initial effectiveness in preventing the disease against all four types of dengue virus, so Vietnam will be one of the countries participating in the trial of this dengue vaccine.
Vietnam will test vaccine to prevent dengue fever |
Professor Nguyen Van Kinh also said that with a vaccine that can be given to both adults and children with the same dose, it is necessary to test and carefully evaluate its impact on health before widely applying it in the community.
Currently, there are 4 types of dengue fever, including: D1, D2, D3 and D4. A person can get dengue fever many times with different types of virus. When a dengue fever patient recovers from being infected with a type of virus, they will be immune to that strain for life.
In Vietnam, in 2023, the main circulating dengue virus types are D1 and D2 and are no different from the virus types circulating in recent years.
Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan speaks at the conference |
Speaking at the conference, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan stated that scientific research to promote application in medical examination and treatment and epidemic prevention is one of the priorities of the health sector. Up to now, in the field of preventive medicine and public health, Vietnam has applied advanced technology in the production of human vaccines, ensuring the production of 11/12 types of vaccines for the expanded immunization program. The most prominent are the research on vaccine production and testing, making Vietnam a country with strengths in vaccine production in the world. The clinical trial management system is recognized by the World Health Organization...
"The Ministry of Health hopes that with the joint efforts and endeavors of scientists, along with the motivations to promote scientific research in health, research and application in medicine will have stronger developments in the coming time," Minister Dao Hong Lan emphasized.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, as of October 2023, the country has recorded more than 93,800 cases of dengue fever, with 26 deaths. In Hanoi, from the beginning of 2023 to now, about 18,000 cases of dengue fever have been recorded (an increase of more than 3 times compared to the same period in 2022), including 3 deaths.
