At Chieng Di 1 village, Van Ho commune, while quickly taking care of the orange garden of more than 5,000 m², Ms. Trieu Thi Hoi shared: In 2020, I planted more than 300 orange trees. Up to now, the orange trees have grown well, expected to yield nearly a ton. The selling price ranges from 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, mainly traders come to buy directly from the garden, if the harvest is good, after deducting expenses, the revenue is more than 180 million VND.

With only about a month left until harvest time, according to Ms. Hoi, the care techniques at this stage play a decisive role in the yield and quality of the fruit. After the young fruit development period ends, it is necessary to prune off small branches, diseased branches and dense fruit clusters so that the tree can concentrate nutrients on the remaining fruits. At the same time, adding potassium fertilizer combined with organic fertilizer helps increase sweetness, beautiful fruit color and prolongs the post-harvest preservation time.

In addition, I regularly check the garden, detect pests early to treat with biological products, minimize the use of chemicals to ensure food safety. In addition, I also apply many technical measures such as regular watering; use biological traps instead of traditional pesticides. These methods not only help plants grow healthy, fruit sweeter and shinier, but also meet clean and safe production standards.

From the initial small-scale growers, up to now, Van Ho commune has formed a concentrated citrus fruit growing area, mainly Canh oranges, Vinh oranges and Navel oranges, Chieng Yen native tangerines in Hua Tat, Pa Cop, Chieng Di 1, Pieng Cha, Pa Puoc villages... Thanks to the year-round cool climate and suitable soil, the plants grow well, have stable yields, and delicious fruit quality, which are favored by consumers.

Not only stopping at traditional production, some households and cooperatives have boldly switched to organic, safe production, associated with building local product brands. A typical example is the Meha Organic Agriculture Cooperative in Pa Cop village with tangerine trees laden with fruit. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Director of the Cooperative, said: Based on the need to consume clean and safe food, in 2017, the model of growing organic tangerine according to VietGAP standards was deployed by the Cooperative with an initial area of more than 10 hectares. Up to now, the tangerine garden has a stable harvest, with an average yield of 10-15 tons/ha, and a profit after deducting expenses of about 500 million VND/ha.

The model creates regular jobs for 3-4 local workers with a stable income of 4-5 million VND/month. In addition, the Cooperative is experimenting with planting more than 500 Navel orange trees from 2024, aiming to diversify products, improve quality, and adaptability to natural conditions.

The entire Van Ho commune is growing 1,630 hectares of fruit trees of all kinds, of which nearly 150 hectares meet VietGAP standards. To help people develop the economy , the commune is researching to turn citrus fruit trees into key crops, helping farmers increase their income and effectively change the crop structure. Mr. Nguyen Hong Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Van Ho commune, said: The commune government also coordinates with specialized agencies to organize training and instruct people on care techniques, pest control, balanced fertilization, ensuring productivity, quality and food safety. At the same time, mobilize households growing oranges and grapefruits to link up with businesses, supermarkets, and clean agricultural product stores in and outside the province to consume their products.

Promoting its advantages, Van Ho commune focuses on building a citrus fruit production area that meets VietGAP and organic standards, encouraging farmers to use biological fertilizers, limiting chemical pesticides, applying water-saving irrigation technology, while at the same time linking production with traceability and promoting product brands, building a sustainable commodity production area, bringing the Van Ho agricultural product brand far and wide, and being welcomed by many consumers.
