Following the small road, we went to Chang Lua village, visited the pumpkin growing model of Mr. Lo Van Nghiep's family, when the members were sorting the pumpkins to sell to traders in time. Leading us to visit the pumpkin garden full of fruit, Mr. Nghiep shared: Previously, I planted more than 1 hectare of land with corn and cassava, the price was unstable, the economic efficiency was not high. In 2019, I tried planting 1,000 m2 of green pumpkin. After 3 months, the pumpkin was harvested, with a yield of 5 tons of fruit. Realizing that the pumpkin plant is suitable for the soil and climate, in 2020, I expanded the pumpkin growing area to more than 1 hectare and maintained it over the years. This year, my family is expected to harvest 60 tons of pumpkin, with a selling price of 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, the highest price was 18,000 VND/kg.

Not only Mr. Nghiep, currently, farmers in Chang Lua village have expanded the area of green squash to more than 30 hectares, bringing a stable source of income for farmers.

Currently, green squash grown in Muong Bu commune is purchased by traders at the garden , bringing hundreds of millions of dong in income to many households. After many years of purchasing agricultural products in Muong Bu , Mr. Vu Dang Ke, Muong Bu Agricultural Cooperative, said: This year, the weather is unusual, many large vegetable and fruit growing areas in the Northern Delta provinces have had bad harvests, leading to a shortage of goods in the market, so agricultural products are purchased at higher prices than in previous years. On the other hand, squash here is suitable for the climate, giving large, dense fruits, which are very popular with customers.

The effectiveness of the pumpkin growing model in Muong Bu has a significant role of the local Party Committee and government in guiding and encouraging people to change the appropriate crop structure. Muong Bu commune has proactively coordinated with specialized agencies to organize training courses and transfer science and technology. Coordinated with the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank in the region to create conditions for households in need of preferential loans to invest in production and expand acreage.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Hiep, Vice Chairman of Muong Bu Commune People's Committee, informed: The green pumpkin growing model is suitable for the actual conditions of the locality, helping people to significantly increase their income. Currently, the total area of green pumpkin in the commune is about 50 hectares, mainly concentrated in Chang Lua, Pat, Hong Hin, Liu villages, with 78 households participating in planting. In the coming time, the commune will continue to encourage and support people to replicate the model, at the same time strengthen connections, find businesses to consume products, and gradually build the brand of Muong Bu green pumpkin products.
Green squash is a short-term crop, harvested after 90 days from planting, the harvest time is about more than 1 month with 6-7 batches of fruit. The success of the green squash growing model in Muong Bu is a testament to the dynamism of farmers in converting the crop structure. With the attention of the Party Committee, the government and the bold investment of farmers, Muong Bu will continue to have many more effective economic models, contributing to improving people's lives.
