"Two An-124 heavy transport aircraft are at the airfield, both with their noses raised and preparing to load equipment or cargo. Nearby, a Ka-52 attack helicopter is being dismantled and possibly prepared for transport while elements of the S-400 air defense unit are also preparing to leave their previous deployment site at the airbase," Maxar said.

As for Russia's naval base at Tartous, Russia's only repair and resupply hub in the Mediterranean, Maxar said: "It has remained largely unchanged since the December 10 photo, with two destroyers still observed off Tartous."

Russia has not commented on the new information. Russia, which has been an ally of President Assad's government for decades, is said to be trying to reach an agreement with the Syrian opposition to ensure the safety of the bases. The Kremlin said its focus since the fall of President Assad's government has been to ensure the security of military bases and diplomatic missions in Syria.
