According to Russia's TASS news agency, the decision was made following statements by Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea about the results of the recent presidential election in Venezuela.

On social network X , Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced: " The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the Republic of Peru, on the basis of Article 45 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961".

Mr. Gil said Caracas was forced to make this decision after the statement of the Peruvian Foreign Minister, which he said "ignored the will of the Venezuelan people and the Constitution".

Previously, on July 29, Caracas asked all diplomatic officials at the embassies of Peru and six other Latin American countries: Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay to leave Venezuela.

Caracas also requested the closure of the diplomatic missions of these countries for "interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs".

Venezuela also withdrew all its diplomatic staff from the above countries.

Earlier the same day, the Venezuelan National Electoral Council announced the election results, in which President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected for a third six-year term.
