Why do ENT doctors advise against letting children eat too much at dinner?

ENT doctors often advise not to let children eat too much at dinner, and not to eat after 8pm to prevent illness.

In the early stages of development, children often get sick, especially with ear, nose and throat diseases. Eating too much at dinner is not good for children. However, after taking their children to see a doctor, parents only pay attention to the prescription without paying attention to the favorable factors affecting the healing process or the possibility of recurrence of the disease. For example, when parents and grandparents see their children or grandchildren sick, they want to feed them a lot to get well soon, causing many children to be afraid of food, vomiting while eating...; and then feeding them extra meals late at night, even late at night.

Below, we give some reasons why we should not let children eat too much at dinner and should not feed them after 8pm.

Eating too much puts pressure on children's digestive system.

Eating too much at dinner can put a lot of pressure on your child's digestive system. When the stomach is too full, digestion becomes more difficult, leading to discomfort, bloating and pushing gastric juices up into the nasopharynx. The throat lining has to operate in an acidic environment instead of the previous slightly alkaline environment, making it more susceptible to inflammation and making the healing process of rhinopharyngitis more difficult.

Risk of obesity leading to hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx (including adenoids and tonsils)

Eating too much at dinner can contribute to overweight and obesity in children because the calories taken in will not be fully used because of less activity when sleeping. As a result, the lymphoid tissue in the throat area overgrows but cannot ensure the assigned protective function of the nasopharynx. On the other hand, due to the large size, the drainage of the natural cavities in the ear-nose-throat area such as the ears, sinuses, etc. is reduced, causing fluid to stagnate, causing otitis media and sinusitis.

Eating late affects sleep

Eating late, especially after 8pm, can disrupt your child's sleep. Food remaining in the stomach can cause discomfort and make it difficult for your child to fall into a deep sleep. Lack of sleep will affect your child's mental and physical development, leading to fatigue and reduced ability to concentrate the next day. Your child's sleep quality will decrease, leading to a decrease in the child's body's resistance.

Unhealthy eating habits increase the risk of disease

If your child regularly overeats at dinner or eats late, this can create bad habits in their daily life. They may not learn how to control their portion sizes, which can lead to unhealthy eating habits in the future. Establishing good eating habits at an early age will help your child develop good habits throughout their life.

Poor diet can increase the risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems later in life. Teaching children about healthy eating habits can help protect their health in the future.

To ensure the health and comprehensive development of children, parents should pay attention to their children's eating habits. Create a habit of eating dinner early and properly, helping children recover from ear-nose-throat diseases and avoid recurrence.
