Messaging service Telegram has significantly increased the provision of user data to French authorities in the second half of 2024.
According to figures released by Telegram from July to September 2024, the company handed over data on 210 users, including IP addresses and phone numbers, at the request of French authorities.
In the last three months of 2024, this number jumped to 673 users. Thus, in the second half of the year, Telegram provided data on more than 2,000 users to French authorities, of which more than 50% were transferred in the fourth quarter.
Previously, in the first half of 2024, Telegram only responded to 10 data requests.
The crackdown comes after the app's founder, Pavel Durov, was arrested in Paris and held for four days in August 2024. After being charged with controlling criminal content on the Telegram platform, Durov was banned from leaving France.
Mr. Durov and his colleagues explained that Telegram had previously failed to properly handle many requests from French and European authorities, sending them to the wrong department within the company. However, following the incident, Telegram adjusted its moderation rules to increase cooperation with investigators.
A source familiar with the matter also said that Telegram is increasingly responding to requests from the French judicial system and many other countries./.
