Video mocking Liu Yifei and a series of A-list stars causes controversy in China

(Dan Tri) - A video posted by Chinese Vogue magazine is causing a stir in public opinion as it is considered to be satirizing the habit of Chinese stars competing for position and attention at events.

The "battlefield" of the red carpet and the habit of artists vying for spots.

At the 2024 anniversary celebration of Vogue China, Liu Yifei was given preferential treatment by the organizers, appearing in a central position on the cover of the September issue. This sparked controversy regarding the level of "favoritism" within the Chinese fashion industry.

Previously, in 2021, at Vogue's New Chapter Night party, the order of appearance and seating arrangements of celebrities such as Tang Wei, Yang Mi, Zhou Dongyu, Song Qian, Tong Yao, He Hui, Zhang Junning, etc., also caused a stir.

According to the original plan, Tang Wei was supposed to appear last, followed by Yang Mi, and earlier by actors Gong Jun, Zhang Yixing, and young actress Zhou Dongyu. However, Yang Mi's appearance was later adjusted to be earlier, resulting in a rushed and incomplete look for her.

The highlight was the group photo taken at the end of the event, in which Tang Wei, Zhou Dongyu, and Gong Jun were seated in the center. This arrangement continued to cause a stir on Chinese social media, with many people arguing that the photo's position reflected status within the entertainment industry.

Vogue China releases a video titled "Guide to Entering a Party".

On October 22nd, Vogue China posted a video titled "Guide to Entering the Party," which is believed to be a subtle reminder to artists ahead of the magazine's 20th anniversary celebration on October 23rd.

The video opens with a reminder: "Please enter through the main gate; the tunnels and secret passages are temporarily closed." This statement reminds viewers of the 2023 incident when actress Dilraba Dilmurat "got lost" on the red carpet at Tencent's Starlight Awards .

When the MC invited her to take her seat, the actress went in the wrong direction, causing the keyword "Dilraba Dilmurat lost" to trend on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. Some opinions suggest that the Xinjiang beauty was only "pretending to be lost" to attract attention.

Vogue also mentioned the requirement to adhere to the dress code. This is seen as an indirect reminder following Liu Yifei's striking yellow dress at the Marie Claire China gala in 2024, when the event's theme required aviator attire and black. Liu Shishi, on the other hand, wore a completely different outfit, a moss green one.

The unwritten rules of seating in the Chinese entertainment industry.

According to Sohu and Sina, Vogue China even detailed red carpet regulations, including the number of assistants allowed, seating arrangements for each artist, and the order of appearance. These are all very sensitive issues.

The placement in magazines and the seating arrangement at events all reflect a star's status in the Chinese entertainment industry (Photo: Vogue).

In the Chinese entertainment industry, seating arrangement and red carpet order are considered a measure of prestige. Artists seated in the front or middle rows are generally perceived as having "high status," while those in the back rows are seen as "past their prime" or less prominent.

Furthermore, the star with the highest and most important status will be seated last on the red carpet. And in group photos, the more centrally a star is seated, the more important they are considered to be.

Therefore, allocating VIP seats at events is always a headache for organizers and becomes a topic of discussion after each event. Vogue China's new video is seen as a "wake-up call" to celebrities, amidst criticism of the Chinese entertainment industry for its formality and status-grabbing habits.
