VnExpressVnExpress07/01/2024

Vietnam's chances of winning the 2023 Asian Cup are ranked 16th out of 24 teams, while the rate of passing the group stage is ranked 18th.

According to We Global Football (WGF), Vietnam has a 0.4% chance of winning the championship, ranking above Thailand, Bahrain (0.24%), Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan (0.16%), Malaysia (0.12%) and Indonesia (0.04%). India and Hong Kong are predicted not to win the championship. Japan has the highest rate of 32.64%, followed by Iran (15.2%), Australia (14.52%) and South Korea (12.08%).

Despite being ranked 16th in the odds of winning the tournament, WGF predicts that Vietnam is only ranked 18th in terms of the ability to pass the group stage, with 44.28%. Following them are Lebanon (40.96%), Malaysia (39), Kyrgyzstan (35.48%), Indonesia (29.28%), India (19.08%) and Hong Kong (7.96%). Meanwhile, Thailand is ranked 16th with 56.8%.

Vietnam's odds of making it through the group stage are lower than Thailand's because they are in a tougher group with Japan, Iraq and Indonesia. Meanwhile, Thailand will face Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan and Oman in Group F.

The 2023 Asian Cup will be held from January 12 to February 10 at nine stadiums in Qatar. The 24 teams will be divided into six groups and compete in a round-robin format, with the six winners, six runners-up and four best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 16.

In addition to WGF, Qatar's Alkass sports channel, through supercomputer calculations, predicted that all four Southeast Asian teams would stop at the group stage. In Group D, Japan will lead, followed by Iraq, Vietnam and Indonesia, but Vietnam cannot become one of the four best third-placed teams.

According to Alkass, the round of 16 matches will be Australia – Palestine, Saudi Arabia – Jordan, UAE – China, Japan – Syria, Uzbekistan – Oman, Qatar – Bahrain, Iran – Lebanon and South Korea – Iraq. In the quarterfinals, Australia will face Saudi Arabia, UAE will face Japan, Oman will face Qatar and Iran will face South Korea.

The two semi-finals are between Japan and Saudi Arabia and Iran and Qatar. Japan will meet Iran in the final and win the championship.

Vietnam reached the quarterfinals of both the 2007 and 2019 Asian Cups. However, this time, under the guidance of coach Philippe Troussier, the squad was not highly regarded. Before the tournament, the team had lost an entire quality squad due to injuries or poor form.
