Vietnam affirms strong commitment in fight against cybercrime

On February 6, at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna (Austria), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) held an information consultation with delegations of member countries on the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime and its implementation, along with plans for negotiating the Protocol to the convention.

The event attracted the participation of representatives of many member countries and international representatives, with the aim of clarifying the procedures for signing and ratifying documents, introducing the Convention Signing Ceremony in Hanoi and promoting global cooperation in dealing with cybercrime.

At the briefing, UNODC announced that the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime is being reviewed and translated into the six official languages ​​of the United Nations. Once completed, the convention will be published on the UNODC website as soon as possible for countries and stakeholders to easily access.

According to regulations, after 2 years from the adoption of the Convention at the United Nations General Assembly (December 2024), the United Nations Special Committee, the body responsible for developing the Convention, will be empowered to chair discussions on the next steps in negotiating the Protocol of the Convention.

The discussion is expected to be launched in early 2026, with the aim of providing more specific legal measures and enhancing international cooperation in tackling transnational cybercrime.

Notably, at the briefing, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, represented the Government of Vietnam to affirm Vietnam's strong commitment to the fight against cybercrime.

The Ambassador emphasized that Vietnam always considers preventing and combating cybercrime as one of the priorities in its national security policy and has actively participated in the negotiation process of the Convention.

Vietnam will host the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime in 2025, the year marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the 80th anniversary of National Day and many other major holidays of Vietnam.

Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang emphasized that this event not only affirms Vietnam's role in the international community but also promotes global cooperation, especially in the Asia -Pacific region, where cybercrime is on the rise.

Vietnam is actively coordinating with UNODC to prepare infrastructure and logistics in Hanoi to ensure the signing ceremony takes place smoothly and safely.

The Ambassador expressed his wish to receive support from member countries and stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in responding to cyber security threats.

The event promises to be an important step forward in enhancing international cooperation and addressing global cybersecurity challenges.
