On October 22, in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang and Mr. Niclas Kvarnström, Director General of the Asia-Pacific Department of the European Union (EU) External Action Service, co-chaired the 5th Meeting of the Vietnam-EU Joint Committee within the framework of the Vietnam-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA).

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that the EU is one of Vietnam's leading economic and development partners. Vietnam always attaches importance to developing the Vietnam-EU comprehensive partnership and cooperation as well as relations with EU member countries. Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang suggested that the EU urge the Parliaments of some member countries of the bloc to soon complete the ratification of the Vietnam-European Union Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), acknowledge Vietnam's efforts in preventing illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, taking into account the interests of EU consumers to soon remove the IUU Yellow Card for Vietnam's seafood exports.

The EU highly appreciated Vietnam's growing role and position in the region and multilateral forums, affirming that Vietnam is the EU's priority partner in the Asia-Pacific region. The EU expressed its desire for the two sides to elevate their relationship to a new level, and to continue to cooperate and support Vietnam in implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), promoting cooperation in new areas such as clean technology, digital transformation, high technology, including semiconductors and artificial intelligence, raw materials, innovation, etc. within the framework of cooperation initiatives with the region such as the EU's Global Gateway Initiative.

The two sides agreed to increase delegation exchanges, especially at high level, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025 (1990-2025), expand cooperation in the fields of defense - security, agriculture, environment, as well as new areas of cooperation; affirmed to actively cooperate to promote the resolution of some existing problems in regulations and the full implementation of the EVFTA.

The two sides agreed to continue promoting and bringing bilateral relations to a new height, commensurate with the potential and position of both sides; at the same time, they discussed a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern; and shared their stance on the need to strengthen coordination in addressing global challenges.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides expressed concern over recent developments and reaffirmed the importance of peace, stability, security, freedom of navigation and aviation in the region, stressing that all parties must comply with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); affirmed support for the early completion of a substantive and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
