Early morning on April 10 (Vietnam time), US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social announcing an immediate increase in tariffs on China to 125%.
He announced that more than 75 countries have proactively contacted the US to negotiate trade issues. Since these countries have not retaliated against the US, he decided to suspend tariffs for 90 days and impose a lower reciprocal tariff of only 10% during this time.
Vietnam is among the countries that have had their taxes postponed.
“Given the fact that more than 75 countries have reached out to U.S. representatives, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury , and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), to negotiate solutions related to trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and other non-tariff measures, these countries, at my strong request, have not retaliated against the United States in any way.
I am suspending the reciprocal tariffs for 90 days and applying a significantly lower reciprocal tariff of 10% during this time, effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this issue!", Mr. Trump shared on Truth Social.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online from the US, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan - participating in the working delegation of Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc - Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam in the US - confirmed that the US temporarily suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days for countries, including Vietnam.
The lower reciprocal tax rate of only 10% proposed by the US President's administration will also apply to all countries.
Mr. Tan confirmed that Vietnam will also enjoy a 10% tax rate during the temporary suspension of reciprocal tax.
Thus, with the reciprocal tax rate applied simultaneously to all countries during the 90-day suspension period, Vietnam still has many advantages in exporting goods to this market.
Have time to prepare, prepare to negotiate tax agreements immediately
According to experts and the business community, this initial result is good news and the first result after the negotiation efforts of General Secretary To Lam, the Government and ministries.
This is also an opportunity for Vietnam to make important strategic changes in negotiating reciprocal taxes, negotiating bilateral agreements with the US as well as restructuring production and business activities...

Information from the Government released on the morning of April 10, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc, as Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam, met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, affirming that Vietnam wishes to continue to strengthen and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the US.
In particular, Vietnam wishes to work with relevant US agencies to concretize the contents of the exchange between General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump on April 4, thereby continuing to maintain stable and sustainable economic and trade relations, for the benefit of businesses and people of the two countries.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the US has agreed that the two sides should begin negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement that would include tariff agreements and has asked technical levels from both sides to start discussions immediately.
The two sides agreed to continue to closely coordinate to promote a favorable business environment, proactively review and consider minimizing non-tariff barriers to each other's goods, creating favorable conditions for US businesses to increase investment and business in Vietnam, and strengthening coordination to control and prevent acts of trade fraud.
