Vietnam supports victims in suing companies that produced Agent Orange (dioxin), and requires these businesses to take responsibility for the consequences suffered by the Vietnamese people, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said.
Responding to the press today (August 22), Ms. Hang said the severe consequences of Agent Orange (dioxin) used by the US during the war in Vietnam still exist.
Responding to the Paris Court of Appeals rejecting Ms. Tran To Nga's appeal in the lawsuit against companies that produced Agent Orange, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said Vietnam regrets this ruling.
"We have repeatedly expressed our views on this. The severe consequences still deeply impact the country and people of Vietnam, including the long-term, serious consequences of Agent Orange," said the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson.
“We strongly support the victims of Agent Orange dioxin in demanding that the chemical companies that produced and supplied Agent Orange to the US during the war in Vietnam, causing millions of Vietnamese people to become victims, be responsible for remedying the consequences,” said Ms. Hang.
Today (August 22 local time), a court in Paris rejected the appeal of Ms. Tran To Nga, who since 2014 has been pursuing a lawsuit against Monsanto and other agricultural chemical companies over the production of Agent Orange. The US military used this toxic substance during the war in Vietnam and had a negative impact on many generations of Vietnamese people.
The court upheld the companies’ legal immunity on the grounds that they were manufacturing under contract to the US government. She lost the first case in 2021.
