Volkswagen's ambitious target of producing 200 GWh of batteries by 2030 is now being reconsidered, Thomas Schmall, head of the battery division at Volkswagen, told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS).
The German automaker had previously set a target of producing up to 240 GWh of battery capacity by 2030. Now, the target has been reduced to 200 GWh. They also plan to build six battery factories across Europe by 2030.
However, according to Mr. Schmall's statements, this target may be reassessed as consumer demand for electric vehicles declines. New factory expansion will only be carried out as the electric vehicle market grows.
Volkswagen considers reducing electric car battery production.
So far, PowerCo, Volkswagen’s battery subsidiary, has confirmed the construction of three factories in Spain, Canada and Germany. These factories have a combined capacity of up to 170 GWh, but the potential for capacity expansion is still open.
It is currently undecided whether Volkswagen will continue to build additional battery factories or expand existing factories in Spain and Canada.
As global demand for electric vehicles continues to fluctuate, Volkswagen is carefully navigating its battery production strategy, ensuring capacity is aligned with the changing market while remaining flexible in future investments.
