Alcohol poisoning case: Methanol content in alcohol exceeds 1,073.05 times the prescribed level

NDO - On April 9, the Department of Health of Tien Giang province said that the unit had sent a report to the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health) and the People's Committee of Tien Giang province about 8 cases in the province traveling to Ninh Thuan and being poisoned by drinking alcohol, including one death.

After the incident, Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center ( Tien Giang ) coordinated with Tien Giang Food Safety and Hygiene Department to collect samples and send them to Ho Chi Minh City Public Health Institute for testing of 2 wine samples: Kha Thy Cherry wine 29% and Kha Thy sticky rice wine 40% to test the following indicators: Methanol content, mg/l ethanol 100 o ; Ester content (Ethyl acetate); Aldehyde content (Acetaldehyde), mg/l ethanol 100 o ; Hydrocyanic acid; alcohol content (ethanol): 2.6%; Furfural; higher alcohols (1-propanol, 2-Methyl-1-propanol, 3-Methyl-1-butanol).

Based on the test results No. 006664/VYTCC and No. 006665/VYTCC dated April 4 of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health , the results are as follows: Sample of Kha Thy Cherry wine 29 degrees, methanol content is 10,730,571mg/l of 100 degree ethanol. Sample of Kha Thy sticky rice wine 40%, methanol content is 12,184,266mg/l of 100 degree ethanol .

Based on the self-declared records of the Kha Thy 29-degree cherry wine product by the facility that self-declared the product; based on the discharge papers issued by Cho Ray Hospital to patients: D. VL, THT, D. T. D., PVTB on April 1, with a diagnosis of methanol poisoning; based on the discharge papers issued by Cho Ray Hospital to patients: THD, HTNH on April 4, with a diagnosis of methanol poisoning; based on the death certificate issued by Cho Ray Hospital to the deceased PNQK on April 1, with the cause of death being methanol poisoning.

The above bases show that, for the sample of Kha Thy Cherry wine 29 degrees, the test result of methanol content is 10,730,571mg/l of 100-degree ethanol, 1,073.05 times higher than the prescribed level compared to QCVN 6-3:2010/BYT (not greater than 10,000mg/l of 100-degree ethanol specified in Appendix II, section III. 4. Fruit wine) according to the product self-declaration file.

For the Kha Thy 40% glutinous rice wine sample, the test result is 12,184,266 mg/l of 100-degree ethanol. Because the facility does not self-declare the product, the test result is not evaluated according to the self-declared product file, but based on TCVN 7043-2013, the Kha Thy 40% glutinous rice wine sample has a test result of 12,184,266 mg/l of 100-degree ethanol, 6,092.13 times higher than the prescribed level compared to TCVN 7043-2013 for distilled white wine (not greater than 2,000 mg/l of 100-degree ethanol specified in section 4.2.2.2).


Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health concluded: 8 cases of Tien Giang people traveling to Ninh Thuan province suffered food poisoning due to drinking Kha Thy 29-degree Cherry wine (production date June 9, 2024, expiry date 3 years from the date of production) containing Methanol content of 10,730,571 mg/l of 100-degree ethanol , 1,073.05 times higher than the prescribed level compared to QCVN6-3:2010/BYT (not greater than 10,000 mg/l of 100-degree ethanol specified in Appendix II, section III. 4. Fruit wine) according to the self-declared product records produced at Facility 2 of Kha Thy Limited Liability Company (Binh Tao Hamlet, Trung An Commune, My Tho City, Tien Giang Province), Kha Thy Limited Liability Company Office (No. 3, Lot 16, Tan Phu Hamlet, Tan Ly Dong Commune, Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province).

Up to now, there has been one death (PNQK), one case (BTĐ) transferred to Tien Giang General Hospital; 6 cases (THD, HTNH, D.T.D, PVTB, THT, D.VL) are in stable health condition and working normally.

According to the Department of Health of Tien Giang province, at 2:00 p.m. on April 1, 2025, Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center (Tien Giang) made a working record on verifying personal information of food poisoning at Tan Phu Dong District People's Court.

Through actual verification at the court, the authorities recorded that the remaining total of 12 bottles (glass bottles with a volume of 500ml/bottle) were produced at Kha Thy Limited Liability Company (No. 3, Lot 16, Tan Phu Hamlet, Tan Ly Dong Commune, Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province), production date June 9, 2024, expiry date 3 years from the date of manufacture.

Of which, 2 bottles have been opened: one is still full, one has been drunk about 200ml (drank on January 7, 2025, 300ml remaining); the front and back stamps are cherry wine, alcohol content 29%. 10 bottles are intact, of which 4 bottles have the front stamps being sticky rice wine, the back stamps being cherry wine, alcohol content 40%; 6 bottles have 2-sided stamps being cherry wine, alcohol content 29%.
