Just debuted, Muller wants to take Messi's title

Despite having won football's most prestigious titles, Thomas Muller's thirst for victory was not quenched when he made his MLS debut.

At 35, Thomas Muller insists he has no plans to retire. On the contrary, the German attacking midfielder has chosen a new “adventure” in the United States, joining the Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) with one goal in mind: to continue his title hunt.

“Adventure is only fun when it comes with the opportunity to compete for a title,” Muller said at his presentation on August 14 (US time). “Looking at the current form of the Whitecaps and their progress over the years, I believe that opportunity is there – not just this year, but next year as well.”

Müller signed a contract until the end of the 2025 season, with an option to extend until 2026 as a “Designated Player” – becoming the club’s biggest star in history. After 17 years with Bayern Munich, he left the Bundesliga with 250 goals, 13 national championships and a total of 33 trophies. At the national team level, Müller won the 2014 World Cup, won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup, and scored a total of 10 goals at two World Cups.

For Muller, the glorious past is just a motivation to look forward to the future: “What motivates me is the title ahead, competing with opponents, teammates and myself. My physical condition is still too good to hang up my boots.”

The Whitecaps have exceeded expectations this season, currently sitting fifth in the MLS Western Conference with 45 points, six points behind the leaders with seven games remaining. They still have a chance to compete for the Supporters' Shield, and could potentially face Messi's Inter Miami in the MLS Cup playoffs in October. In the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Whitecaps have just reached the final and are aiming to win their fourth consecutive Canadian title.

Muller anh 1

Muller is a legend of Bayern Munich.

Coach Jesper Sorensen believes Muller has helped the team grow through his work ethic and ability to set an example. His presence has led to record-breaking home ticket sales at the end of the season, with his debut against Houston Dynamo selling out.

Muller also felt the frenzy as soon as he landed at Vancouver International Airport last Wednesday night. He was greeted by fans, flags flying, cheers ringing out. Indigenous chiefs presented him with a traditional blanket before he signed autographs, posed for photos and watched the Whitecaps draw 2-2 with Forge FC in the Canada Cup semifinals.
