Earlier this month, Microsoft ended its program that allowed Windows 7 and 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. In addition to blocking the upgrade path, the change also affects the Windows 11 activation mechanism. From now on, activating a copy of Windows 11 requires a genuine Windows 11 or 10 key. If you need a valid license for the new operating system, Microsoft will reduce the price by $20.
From today, Windows 7 and 8.1 users who want to upgrade to Windows 11 must pay a fee.
Customers can buy Windows 11 Home or Pro keys from the Microsoft Store or official retailers like Amazon. Windows 11 Home, the standard version for typical home use, costs $139.99, but is discounted by 14 percent or $20, according to Neowin.
People upgrading from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 11 should check the hardware requirements and make sure their computer can run Windows 11.
Microsoft has also released a new build of Windows 11 for testing on the Canary Channel. It introduces support for Bluetooth Low Energy Audio, improved Windows Location permissions, and a few other small changes. One of these includes the ability to view and share Wi-Fi passwords using QR codes. Now, in addition to displaying Wi-Fi passwords, Windows 11 will also generate a QR code for the selected network, allowing you to connect to a new device without having to select the network and enter its complicated password.
