On June 26, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital reported a case of allergic contact dermatitis after lip tattooing.
Ms. LTH (39 years old, living in Binh Duong) came to the hospital a week ago with swollen lips, thick crusts, and a burning pain.
Previously, Ms. H. had her lips tattooed at a beauty salon. A week after the tattoo, her lips peeled continuously, the crust became thicker and thicker, and the burning, uncomfortable feeling increased.

Doctors said that Ms. H.'s case was allergic contact dermatitis after tattooing. Ms. H. was prescribed anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy treatment, and applied anti-inflammatory and anti-thickness cream.
It is expected that Ms. H.'s treatment will take a long time and it will be difficult to recover to her original state. In case the allergic reaction continues, she may need laser treatment to gradually remove the tattoo ink particles that cause the allergy.
A few months ago, the Dermatology Department of Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital also received a case of severe complications after lip tattooing. Ms. TT (27 years old, living in Dong Nai) was hospitalized with a swollen upper lip, pus discharge, and a cracked lower lip, causing pain and fever.
Two weeks before being hospitalized, Ms. T. went to a beauty salon in Dinh Quan district (Dong Nai) and was advised to get lip tattooing for 2 million VND.
A week after getting her lip tattooed, her lower lip broke out in pimples. The next day, her upper lip also had many large, painful, swollen pustules with fever. Ms. T. contacted the beauty salon again and was directed to a nearby clinic for examination.
At the clinic, Ms. T. was diagnosed with a post-tattoo infection and prescribed antibiotics, but her condition did not improve, her lips became more swollen and oozed pus. Too frightened, she rushed to the doctor and was ordered to be hospitalized.
Dr. Tran Nguyen Anh Tu - Head of the Department of Dermatology, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital - said that the high demand for lip tattoos has led to an increase in lip tattoo complications. Lip tattoo complications account for the highest rate of tattoo complications that come to the hospital.
On average, the hospital receives 3-5 cases of complications due to lip tattooing each month, while complications from tattoos in other areas such as eyebrow tattoos, eyelid tattoos, etc. are only about 1-2 cases/month.
According to Dr. Anh Tu, lip tattooing carries many risks of complications such as infection, viral infections such as hepatitis B, C, HIV... if the person performing the procedure does not ensure a sterile environment and technique.
If the lip tattoo facility uses poor quality, cheap tattoo ink, it can cause severe allergic reactions at the tattoo site such as swelling, redness, blisters...
Most cases of complications occur because the tattooing place does not advise or advises incorrectly on post-tattoo care.
Doctors recommend that if there is an accident caused by lip tattooing, you should go to the hospital early for timely treatment. Absolutely do not treat it yourself because the injury is likely to become more serious and recovery will be more difficult.
