This ultra-rare Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa was auctioned at an event held by Broad Arrow Auctions near Lake Como (Italy). At the auction, an anonymous collector won the right to own this Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa for 5.3 million pounds (186.8 billion VND). After adding taxes and auction fees, the total value of the transaction reached 6.3 million pounds (equivalent to more than 220 billion VND), setting a new record for the most expensive 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa ever sold on the international market.
This Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa was produced in 1948. Chassis number 004C, this is one of 9 166 Spyder Corsa designed by Enzo Ferrari himself for both racing and civil transportation purposes. The first owners of the car were the Besana brothers - pioneering customers of the Ferrari brand. Between 1949 and 1957, the car competed in many prestigious European races such as Targa Florio and Mille Miglia, leaving a strong mark in Ferrari's racing history. In 1965, the car was bought by American classic car collector Henry Austin Clark for about £3,400 (VND 119.8 million, at current exchange rates), a modest figure compared to the actual value of the car at that time.
After purchasing the car, Clark restored the Ferrari to the highest standards, preserving almost all original components such as the V12 engine, gearbox, chassis and body. The car also comes with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, confirming that it is one of the first Ferraris ever produced. Despite receiving an offer to buy the car for £20,000 (VND 704.9 million, at current exchange rates) in 1971, Clark decided to keep the car until 2015, before transferring it to another famous Ferrari collector. Despite being more than seven decades old, the classic car still retains its incredible performance: a top speed of 201 km/h and the ability to accelerate from 0–96 km/h in just 6 seconds, impressive specifications for a car from the 1940s.
Not only creating a fever among classic car enthusiasts, this Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa auction is also a vivid testament to the enduring appeal of the Ferrari brand - a symbol associated with racing history and the spirit of superior mechanical craftsmanship of the global automobile industry.
