World pepper prices: Sharp decline in Indonesia and Vietnam
In the world market, pepper prices unexpectedly fluctuated after a stable day. The Indonesian exchange decreased slightly. Currently, these two items have decreased by 0.09% and 0.11% respectively, listed at 7,425 USD/ton (equivalent to 194,936 VND/kg); white pepper is listed at 10,124 USD/ton (about 265,796 VND/kg).
In Vietnam, the export price of black pepper 500 g/l and 550 g/l decreased by more than 3%, bringing the price to fluctuate in the range of 6,300 to 6,400 USD/ton (equivalent to 165,401 - 168,026 VND/kg). The price of ASTA white pepper fell by 2.15%, to 9,300 USD/ton (about 244,163 VND/kg).
On the other hand, the Malaysian and Brazilian exchanges were stable. Malaysian white pepper continued to hold the highest global price at 11,850 USD/ton (equivalent to 311,110 VND/kg).
Comments and forecasts
In May, Vietnam's pepper exports were estimated at 25,000 tons, earning 176 million USD. Compared to the previous month, the volume decreased by 5.4% and the value decreased by 4.4%. Compared to the same period last year, the export volume decreased sharply by nearly 20%, but the value increased by more than 26%.
In the first 5 months of 2025, Vietnam exported about 98,600 tons of pepper, equivalent to 684.4 million USD. Although output decreased by 13.6% compared to last year, export value increased sharply by nearly 40%. The main reason was the skyrocketing average export price, reaching about 6,937 USD/ton, up 61.1% over the same period in 2024. In May alone, the export price reached 7,039 USD/ton, 1% higher than the previous month and nearly 57% higher than last year.
Since April, the pepper market has been in a slump due to the impact of global trade tensions. This is usually the peak time for business activities, but now it has been clearly affected, causing a gloomy atmosphere to cover the entire spice industry.
The situation has been further complicated by the fact that many importing countries have delayed signing new contracts due to uncertainty over tariff policies. The hesitation of businesses has caused inventories in many markets to decline significantly in the past two months.
However, there are still positive signs as Vietnam and the US have made some progress after two rounds of trade negotiations. The two sides have agreed on a number of issues, or at least narrowed their differences. The next round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in early June 2025, and is expected to create clearer changes for the market.
