Toyota Land Cruiser FJ – is preparing for its global debut on October 20, according to leaked information from the Japanese press. This is considered a “mini” version of the legendary Land Cruiser line, aimed at customers who are passionate about off-road but want a more compact and flexible vehicle. According to Mag-X, Toyota will hold a private media preview on October 20, before making a global announcement the following morning, October 21 (Japan time). This means that users on the East Coast of the US can expect to see the first images around 3 p.m. on October 20.
The new model will likely be called Land Cruiser FJ 2026 and will be produced in Thailand, then exported to many other markets. The Japanese domestic market will welcome this model around mid-2026. The chassis platform of the new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 2026 is said to be IMV-0, similar to the new generation Toyota Hilux Champ and Fortuner - a direction that helps save costs and at the same time maintain the traditional off-road spirit. Toyota has remained tight-lipped, releasing only a single teaser image in August 2023. However, a newly released design drawing from a patent application has provided a clearer look at what the upcoming SUV will look like.
The design shows a compact SUV with a 5-door configuration, a square shape with a strong off-road character. The front LED lights, boldly embossed wheel arches, large C-pillars and spare tire mounted on the tailgate all remind of the old FJ Cruiser. The body is highlighted by unpainted black plastic cladding running around the front bumper, side skirts and wheel arches – details familiar on real off-road vehicles. High ground clearance, creating confidence when moving on complex terrain. Based on these images, many experts believe that the new model is a continuation and upgrade of the 2021 Compact Cruiser EV concept, with an overall size of about 4,500 mm - the standard for the small SUV segment. In terms of powertrain, the Land Cruiser FJ will likely be equipped with a 2.7L gasoline engine, along with the option of a 2.8L turbocharged diesel engine combined with a mild hybrid system - similar to the Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux and Fortuner. The gasoline version can use a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel version will come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Full-time 4-wheel drive will be standard equipment, keeping the "true Land Cruiser" philosophy.
Unlike the large Land Cruiser models such as the 250 and 300 Series that use the modern TNGA-F platform, the Land Cruiser FJ aims for simplicity, durability and traditional off-road capabilities. With a separate chassis, this model is expected to be a worthy choice for adventure enthusiasts, competing directly with small SUVs such as the Ford Bronco Sport. While Toyota has not confirmed whether the patent drawings are the final design, all signs point to the company carefully preparing for an official launch. The Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be available in the Asian market from mid-2026, while distribution plans in North America and Europe are still in doubt.
