The new rural development program is bringing many positive changes to the lives of people in rural areas in the province. In particular, the implementation of effective production models has contributed to improving the material and spiritual life of people, changing the quality of life in rural areas.
The model of intercropping almonds and jackfruit helped Mr. Nguyen Tuan Kiet, in Thuan Hung commune, Long My district, escape poverty and become rich.
One of the key tasks in implementing the construction of new rural areas is to develop production to increase income and effectively reduce poverty for people. For that reason, in recent years, many localities have implemented synchronous solutions, focusing on mobilizing people to renovate mixed gardens and ineffective rice growing areas to switch to cultivating crops and livestock with high economic value. Thanks to the effective implementation of the above solutions, many households have now escaped poverty sustainably thanks to their production models.
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Kiet, in Thuan Hung commune, Long My district, who used to be a poor household in Thuan Hung commune, still sadly recalls the difficult times in the past. Mr. Kiet said: “My family is single, I am the only one at home, but because I had been gardening for many years before but it was not effective, we continued to have difficulties and could not improve.”
Seeing the difficult circumstances of the family, the local government has conducted a review and suggested effective models to help increase income and improve life. Receiving the attention of the local government, along with learning from the experience of the press and friends, Mr. Kiet boldly converted 1 hectare of land to grow almonds intercropped with red-fleshed jackfruit and Thai jackfruit. This is a suitable model, taking short-term to support long-term, the estimated income of the almond garden is about 200 million VND/ha/year, Mr. Kiet used that amount to invest in the jackfruit garden with his automatic irrigation system. "Since implementing this model, my family's economy has developed more stably, thereby improving the quality of life," Mr. Kiet added.
The fruit tree growing model has brought positive results to many people, helping to increase income, effectively reduce poverty, and become rich. Households have applied advanced farming techniques such as intercropping, using organic fertilizers, drip irrigation, and using biological products. This not only helps to increase productivity but also ensures product quality, meeting the increasing demand of the market.
In addition to converting production models to increase profits, adapt to climate change and develop sustainably, farmers in the province have also successfully applied many new models, choosing new crops or livestock breeds to develop production, typically Mr. Thai Thanh Lap, in Vinh Thuan Tay commune, Vi Thuy district, has a stable source of income thanks to participating in the biosafety egg-laying chicken farming model associated with value chain linkage and traceability implemented by the Center for Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Services of Hau Giang province.
“From the initial 200 chickens, after more than 2 years of care, my flock of hens qualified for egg production has grown to about 240, from the initial 3 incubators to now 5 incubators. On average, I earn about 32 million VND/month from my flock of chickens,” Mr. Lap added.
Regarding poverty reduction solutions, the province has organized many dialogues between commune leaders and poor households every year to grasp the thoughts and aspirations of the people, thereby proposing plans and solutions to help people escape poverty sustainably. Mr. Pham Thanh Hung, Vice Chairman of Thuan Hung Commune People's Committee, said that people's awareness of changing the structure of crops and livestock, especially the renovation of mixed gardens, is changing positively. Thanks to that, in recent times, agricultural productivity and output have continuously increased, leading to improved income, so the material and spiritual life of the people has been and is increasingly developing, which is the result of the synchronous implementation of many solutions such as increasing income and reducing poverty for the people.
Currently, Thuan Hung commune, Long My district has an average income per capita of nearly 75.6 million VND/year, with the poverty rate reduced to 0.36%. Rural roads have been upgraded and concreted, facilitating travel and transport of goods. Household economy has improved, and people's material and spiritual lives have been enhanced.
