Dr. Huynh Tuan Vu, a lecturer in the Traditional Medicine Department at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, shared that during the hot summer months, the humid weather easily leads to dehydration, dry mouth, fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, dizziness, and an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. Adding fruits to cool the body is one way to feel comfortable in the summer heat. Eating fruit helps rehydrate, cool the body, boost the immune system, reduce stress, and restore the body's natural energy during hot weather. Summer is the season for watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, grapefruit, oranges, etc. These fruits are sweet and refreshing, high in water content, and rich in nutrients, effectively helping the body cool down.

Benefits of mangoes

Mangoes, in particular, offer numerous health benefits and have a distinctive sweet and fragrant taste that many people love. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, ripe mangoes have a sweet and sour taste, cool the body, quench thirst, promote urination, moisten the lungs, and clear phlegm.

"Mangoes also contain plenty of fiber to support the digestive system, vitamins (abundant in vitamin C) to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and help maintain healthy skin. The strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of mangoes can help reduce the risk of illnesses that often occur during hot weather," Dr. Vu shared.

Eating mangoes also helps to cool the body, replenish water and electrolytes during the summer.

Some things to keep in mind when eating mangoes.

Dr. Vu advises that although mangoes have many benefits, they should not be consumed in excessive amounts, especially by people with digestive problems or diarrhea. Mangoes should not be eaten on an empty stomach because the high vitamin C content can irritate the stomach and increase gastric acid secretion. People with diabetes should limit their mango consumption; those with sensitive constitutions or allergies, or prone to acne, should drink plenty of water and increase their intake of green vegetables when eating mangoes.

Furthermore, according to the health news website Healthline (USA) , because mangoes contain a lot of phytic acid, they generate heat in the body. To reduce this effect, soak the mangoes in water before eating them. In addition, people should also pay attention to the timing of eating mangoes. The best time to eat mangoes is at breakfast. Avoid eating mangoes after dinner because ripe, sweet mangoes can cause a sudden spike in blood sugar. Avoid drinking a lot of water immediately after eating mangoes as it will dilute the pH level in the stomach, easily causing stomach pain and indigestion.
