According to her, cross-dressing roles inserted into a play often follow a familiar pattern: misunderstanding; forced to disguise due to circumstances; testing family members; homosexual relationships... or simply a "harmless, harmless" role, which is fine to have, but does not affect the play's story, just to entertain and change the atmosphere.
However, when a male actor is forced to play a female role throughout, it requires the actor to be very brave. "Because if he doesn't have the skills, and his transformation isn't mature enough, it's easy for the performance to become ridiculous and not suitable for the story's content" - Meritorious Artist Kim Phuong emphasized.
During her nearly 40 years as a director, she has encountered many thorny themes of drama and reformed opera, but she believes that the plays she stages should avoid falling into the cross-dressing motif.
"I specialize in staging plays, excerpts, and cai luong episodes for the competition programs "Chuong vang vong co" and "Ngan mai chuong vang" of HTV, so this trend cannot be allowed to develop, because the cai luong art form, especially finding the standard for vong co songs, cannot be ruined by the form of the song. And the cross-dressing role, if not handled properly, will lead to consequences later. Even long plays staged on the small screen must ensureeducational value in addition to entertainment factors" - Meritorious Artist Kim Phuong confided.
