- Recently, people in Xuan Duong commune, Loc Binh district have converted ineffective farming land to grow Taiwanese apples. Up to now, the model has initially brought practical economic efficiency, contributing to helping people increase their income.
Since 2018, the Taiwanese apple growing model has begun to appear in Xuan Duong commune. However, at that time, there were only 3 households growing on a small scale. In the past 3 years, the Taiwanese apple growing model has attracted the attention of local people and has developed strongly.
As one of the pioneering households growing Taiwanese apple trees, Ms. Phan Thi Phuong, Tai Nhi village, Xuan Duong commune said: In 2018, I went to visit relatives living in Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province, I learned about the Taiwanese apple growing model. Realizing that this is a tree with many characteristics suitable for the local climate and soil and has quite high economic efficiency, I decided to invest in buying 120 apple seedlings from Bac Giang to plant. Currently, the entire apple growing area of the family has been harvested. In 2023, my family will harvest about 6 tons of fruit, with a selling price ranging from 20,000 - 40,000 VND/kg (depending on the size of the fruit), bringing in an income of over 100 million VND after deducting expenses. It is expected that by the end of December this year, the apple tree will produce a new crop, with an estimated output of about 7 - 8 tons of fruit.
Realizing the effectiveness of growing Taiwanese apples, many households in the commune have learned and invested in developing the model. Accordingly, currently, the whole commune has about 6 hectares of Taiwanese apples, of which about 5 hectares are harvested, with 1 cooperative (9 member households), 15 households growing, mainly concentrated in the villages: Po Chang, Tai Nhi, Ban Lau... This is also the commune with the largest Taiwanese apple growing area in Loc Binh district. In 2023, the commune's apple output will reach about 50 tons, with a total value of over 1.2 billion VND. From growing Taiwanese apples, some households have had an income of 70 - 100 million VND/year.
Mr. Au Van Tuyen, Vice Chairman of Xuan Duong Commune People's Committee, said: In order to support people in developing the model, in recent times, the commune government has stepped up propaganda and encouraged people to convert ineffective farming land to apple growing. In addition, every year, the commune government proactively coordinates with relevant units to organize 2-3 training courses on cultivation (including techniques for planting and caring for Taiwanese apple trees) for people. At the same time, the Commune People's Committee prioritizes using capital sources to implement programs and projects to support people in developing the model. Accordingly, from the capital source of the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas in 2024, the commune has implemented a project to support the expansion of apple growing areas. Currently, the whole commune has 42 households registered to participate in the project, with an area of about 6.03 hectares.
In addition to supporting people to expand the apple growing area, to improve productivity, quality and product value, the commune government is also coordinating with the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) to deploy a Taiwanese apple growing model according to VietGAP standards at Po Chang Agricultural Cooperative, with an area of 2.3 hectares.
Ms. Lam Thi Hau, Director of the Cooperative, said: In early 2024, the Cooperative participated in the model of growing Taiwanese apples according to VietGAP standards. When participating in the model, all households were instructed on the process and techniques of growing and caring for apples according to VietGAP standards; professional staff regularly monitored and guided people to keep diaries, put up signs and implement care measures according to the correct process... After a period of implementing the model, it showed that apple trees cared for according to VietGAP standards developed well and the rate of flowering and fruiting was about 30% higher than before. This year, the Cooperative's apple output is expected to increase by about 10 - 15% compared to 2023 (the Cooperative's apple output in 2023 is 30 tons).
Ms. Duong Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: In order to continue supporting people in developing the model and improving economic efficiency, in the coming time, in addition to continuing to coordinate with the commune government to monitor and guide people in implementing the Taiwanese apple growing model according to VietGAP standards to create products of good quality, meeting the requirements. Currently, the department is coordinating with the commune government and related units to complete documents and procedures, striving to build Taiwanese apples into an OCOP product in 2024.
It can be seen that the Taiwanese apple growing model has initially brought practical economic efficiency to the people in Xuan Duong commune. With the orientation and support of the commune government as well as specialized units, the model will continue to develop in a stable and sustainable direction, thereby contributing to opening up economic prospects for the people.
