The United States, China and Japan continue to be Vietnam's three largest markets. In the first two months of the year, export value to the United States accounted for 21.5% (up 77.3%); China accounted for 21% (up 47.9%) and Japan accounted for 7.2% (up 29.2%).
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said: "Recent export activities, especially in the field of aquatic products and agricultural products, have begun to show positive signs of recovery. However, we need to ensure that this recovery is sustainable and not just a temporary cycle in food demand in major markets. Accordingly, in order for the Vietnamese agricultural and forestry brand to maintain its position in the international market, each product must target specific consumers."
It is necessary to take advantage of free trade agreements (FTAs), especially CPTPP and EVFTA agreements, to boost the export of key agricultural and forestry products and support businesses in signing new export orders. In addition, there should be coordination to support the protection of trademarks and geographical indications for potential Vietnamese export products abroad.
The Chinese market still has great potential for market expansion. So far, Vietnam has signed and implemented trade agreements for products such as meat, coconuts and frozen durian. Next, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will negotiate to open the door for more seafood and watermelons. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on developing smart border gates and railway and road transport networks to facilitate the transportation of agricultural products to China, reduce logistics costs and increase income for farmers.
In order to ensure high quality for Vietnamese agricultural products, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will promote the application of science and technology in production and cultivation. Regarding rice, with political instability affecting global food security, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is determined to maintain 7.1 million hectares of cultivation nationwide with 89% of high-quality rice varieties, ensuring rice output. In the field of aquaculture, it is necessary to enhance capacity and improve equipment for aquaculture research facilities to open up opportunities for self-sufficiency in varieties and develop new varieties.
