Among the delegates were Mr. Vu Xuan Thanh (94 years old, Vinh Tan ward, Vinh city, Nghe An) and his wife, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Lan (87 years old). Due to his advanced age, Mr. Thanh no longer remembers the exact details of the campaign. Currently, Mr. Thanh only remembers that he was an infantryman, belonging to the 312th Division, fighting in the Dien Bien Phu battlefield.
Mr. Thanh said: "My unit fought in the period 1953 - 1954. Initially, I was an infantryman, then transferred to artillery. When the campaign was victorious, my unit was in charge of blocking and preventing the French troops from Dien Bien Phu from retreating to Laos."
After the Dien Bien Phu campaign, Mr. Thanh continued to participate in the resistance war against the US, the border war in 1979, and then retired.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (Mr. Thanh's wife) was a youth volunteer who participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign. Ms. Lan said that when she was young, her house was only across a pond from Mr. Thanh's house, but the two only knew each other superficially.
Ms. Lan said: "When I was 17 years old, when I went to Dien Bien Phu, I met and talked to him. Our work at that time was to build roads, build warehouses, dig trenches, tunnels, and be in charge of logistics behind the scenes. After the campaign was completely victorious, I returned to my hometown, and he continued to join the resistance army. We lived close to each other, shared revolutionary ideals, and had a love affair during wartime, so in 1962, he and I held a wedding in our hometown."
Having been together for more than 60 years, the couple was very moved to be invited to participate in the program to meet Dien Bien soldiers today.
"Can't forget fallen comrades"
Also at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Trong Ap (91 years old), from Dong Quang commune, Dong Son district (Thanh Hoa) was moved, looking at the photos and films. Sharing his feelings, Mr. Ap said: "We have days like today, we cannot forget our fallen comrades."
Present at the tribute, Mr. Nguyen Ba Viet, a Dien Bien soldier living in Ai Son 1 street, Dong Hai ward (Thanh Hoa city) shared that Dien Bien Phu was a time of fire and bullets, hardship, "digging mountains, sleeping in tunnels, pouring rain, eating rice balls" but "unwavering courage, unwavering will", unforgettable. Those were the resounding battles in the center of the Him Lam resistance, opening wide the "steel door" in the North, Hill A1 - "Mud, blood and flowers", the place that marked the fiercest battle.

The battles contributed to the Dien Bien Phu victory that “resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world”, writing a heroic page in the history of our army and people 70 years ago; successfully ending the resistance war against the French colonialists, marking a great turning point in the history of the struggle to build and defend the country of the Vietnamese people.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Viet expressed: "I believe and hope that today's young generation will always be proud, remember and promote the glorious tradition of the nation in general and the spirit of Dien Bien Phu victory in particular, dare to think, dare to do, be proactive, creative, and create new miracles in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland".
