Loan shark apps are becoming a major threat to unsuspecting users as malicious actors continuously release new versions of malware. Although Google has made efforts to control illicit Android apps, some can still bypass the company, as was the case with the 15 apps infected with the SpyLoan malware recently discovered by McAfee.
Several applications infected with the SpyLoan malware have been detected on the Google Play Store.
Eight million Android devices have installed the SpyLoan malware-infected app.
According to McAfee, 15 applications containing the SpyLoan malware found on the Google Play Store have affected more than 8 million Android devices. These applications typically request extensive access to users' personal information and collect this data before sending it to a control server. Notably, these applications use logos and names similar to reputable applications, thus easily bypassing Google's checks.
Users are often lured by promises of quick and easy loans, along with gimmicks like countdown timers to encourage registration. However, many users have reported receiving threatening calls and messages from debt collection agents, and even being threatened with manipulated images from their devices.
Users are prompted to take quick action using a dummy countdown.
McAfee notes that India currently leads in the rate of fraudulent loan applications, followed by Mexico, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Kenya, Colombia, Vietnam, Chile, and Nigeria. Although the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the country's Ministry of Finance have taken action against some applications in recent years, the number of malicious applications continues to increase.

Currently, Google has suspended several apps following reports from McAfee; however, those who have downloaded the apps on the list must manually uninstall them to protect their personal information. Users are advised to check their phones for any suspicious apps on the list. Additionally, limiting the installation of apps from unknown sources is also an effective measure to minimize risks.
