This is the first time the world has exceeded the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold that some 200 countries pledged to prevent under the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.

On the same day, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also made similar confirmations. C3S Director Carlo Buontempo emphasized: "Humanity determines its own destiny, but the way we deal with the climate challenge must be based on practical evidence. The future is in our hands. Fast and decisive action can still change the trajectory of our future climate."

According to The Guardian , scientists believe that humans are the main cause of extreme air and ocean temperatures. In addition, the appearance of the El Nino weather phenomenon also contributed to the abnormal temperatures in 2024.

"Not every year will be a record-breaking one, but the long-term trends are clear. We've seen the impact in heavy rains, heat waves, increased flood risk, and these will get worse if the world continues to emit," said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).
