Medical history shows that Ms. NTG has had dull pain in her left flank for the past 2 months. The pain occasionally recurs, making her uncomfortable and tired.
Worried about her health, she went to Xuyen A General Hospital (HCMC) for a check-up. The patient was ordered an ultrasound and a contrast CT scan, which revealed a retroperitoneal fatty tumor with a diameter of 18 cm, almost occupying the entire retroperitoneal cavity. The doctors determined that this was a large tumor, compressing surrounding organs, and that the longer it was left, the more it would affect the patient's health. Therefore, they decided to surgically remove the tumor. Depending on the pathological results of the tumor, the doctors will give further treatment directions.
On June 27, Master - Doctor Nguyen Doan Ngoc Tran, Department of Urology, Xuyen A General Hospital said that the goal of the surgery is to remove the entire tumor along with some surrounding healthy tissue to ensure that no cancer cells remain. During the surgery, the team tried to carefully separate to both effectively remove the entire tumor and preserve the surrounding organs as much as possible, without damaging the kidneys or blood vessels. In the end, the team removed 3 large tumors, with a total weight of 1.5 kg.
Three 1.5 kg fatty tumors were removed from the patient's body.

"The three tumors were then taken for pathology, the results confirmed that they were well-differentiated liposarcomas, and the tumors had not metastasized to surrounding structures. However, well-differentiated liposarcomas have a high risk of recurrence, so patients need to have a post-operative follow-up plan," said Dr. Ngoc Tran.
Currently, the patient's health has recovered well after surgery, and he can eat and live normally. The patient was discharged from the hospital and scheduled for a follow-up visit later.
Well-differentiated liposarcoma - a rare cancer
Dr. Ngoc Tran said that well-differentiated liposarcoma is a rare cancer, but it is a type of sarcoma with a good prognosis because it has not metastasized. Sarcoma is the general name for a group of cancers that arise from connective tissues such as bones, muscles, fat, cartilage, etc. When cancer originates from fat cells, it is called liposarcoma. This is one of the most common types of sarcoma in adults, often appearing in the limbs (arms, legs) or retroperitoneal cavity.
Most cases of liposarcoma, especially those in the abdomen, do not cause symptoms until the tumor is quite large. The main and only treatment that can cure well-differentiated liposarcoma is complete surgical removal of the tumor.
The challenge after liposarcoma surgery is the high risk of recurrence.
If the patient does not receive timely surgical treatment, the tumor will continue to grow, invading surrounding structures such as the kidneys, intestines, and blood vessels, making the symptoms of the disease more and more severe. Furthermore, if a well-differentiated liposarcoma is left untreated for too long, it can progress to a differentiated liposarcoma, which is a more malignant cancer with a high risk of metastasis, seriously affecting life.
The biggest challenge and inherent feature of well-differentiated liposarcoma is the high risk of local recurrence. This means that the tumor tends to recur in the same location over time, even if the initial surgery was successful. Therefore, close follow-up after surgery is extremely important.
