On the morning of May 23, Binh Chanh District Hospital (HCMC) announced that it had just performed angioplasty to save the legs of two cases with severe complications after many years of diabetes.
Mr. TUO (46 years old, in Soc Trang ) has had diabetes for 13 years (taking medication continuously but not having a check-up), and smokes. A year ago, Mr. O. suffered from infected necrosis of his left toe that gradually spread up his leg and had his leg amputated 3 times. His right leg was painful and numb for a long time, medication did not reduce the pain and recently, his second toe became inflamed and painful similar to his left foot before.
Doctors are performing angioplasty to save a patient.
Doctors diagnosed Mr. O. with near-complete occlusion of the right superficial femoral artery, complete occlusion of the left superficial femoral artery/left calf artery, and diabetic peripheral vascular complications.
The second case is Ms. TTL (62 years old, from Nghe An ), who has had diabetes for 23 years and is on insulin treatment. For the past 2 years, she has felt numbness, pain, and decreased sensation in both lower limbs, and has an infection in the first toe of her right foot. She was treated at the provincial hospital but did not respond and had this toe amputated. Currently, the patient still has pain and numbness in both legs.
Doctors determined that Ms. L. had bilateral posterior tibial artery occlusion and right dorsal artery occlusion, lower limb vascular complications due to diabetes, and acute/chronic kidney damage due to diabetes.
At Binh Chanh District Hospital, both patients received DSA angioplasty to treat limb ischemia due to complications of long-term diabetes with the professional support of Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Tran Minh Hoang, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City.
After the intervention, the patients' vital signs were stable, no bruising, pain relief... and continued to receive optimal medical treatment. Ms. L. will undergo intervention on the left leg artery after 1 week.
