'At 60 I will retire from the stage'

The male singer added that he has prepared everything to be ready to retire and stop singing at the age of 60.

I don't want to be pitied

- Why did you think about retiring and leaving the stage so soon? Was it because of some incident...

Not because of any incident but because of my own choice. I think, everyone's life goes through different stages, first is the innocent stage, then the muscular stage of youth and then the maturity of middle age. I am at the end of middle age.

At this age (Viet Hoan was born in 1966 - 57 years old this year), if talking about fame, I cannot be more famous, my name has already been established. If there is any, it will only flare up and then fade away. I think that an artist who knows how to appreciate the value he created in his youth will know when to stop. Maybe when an artist gets old, his vocal cords will also age, sag, his voice will become hoarse, his beauty will be gone, the audience will still love that artist but it will definitely be a different feeling, a different perspective.

I don’t want to receive love in a pitiful way. I know myself, understand myself and determine my stopping point. I have planned to sing until I am 60 years old and then retire from the stage. After that, I may still appear on stage but only as a guest in a special program, not running shows to earn money like now. I want the audience to remember Viet Hoan as a soulful voice, full of enthusiasm, a beautiful image at the most beautiful time. That is my dream.

- There are many artists now in their 70s and 80s who still sing and contribute, many of them hope to be on stage until their last breath. Is Viet Hoan afraid that other artists will feel hurt by his point of view?

I would like to reiterate that this is my own choice, do not compare it with anyone else. My mother is a famous cai luong artist in Thai Binh . She is beautiful so she often plays the roles of beauties and princesses. When she turned 50, she had to switch to other, older roles. My mother did not like that. She wanted the audience to always remember her at her peak, did not want her beautiful image to change in the eyes of her fans.

My mother said: "The teacher is old, you sing young". When you are old, you should give the stage to the younger generation and retire to the backstage. My mother told me: "I know you have a good voice, you can sing for a long time, but listen to me, know when to stop to keep your image in the hearts of the public. Always remember that you should never let your fans pity or regret you. Knowing when to stop is also a way for me to respect myself. If I don't sing, I still have many other jobs to earn honest money to ensure my life.

Cherishing the dream of building a nursing home for lonely artists

- So when did you start preparing for the day you retired from the stage?

Since I was 45, when wrinkles appeared on my forehead, I started thinking about when I would stop singing. I would have liked to have retired earlier, but because I got married late and had 3 young children, I still had to go on shows to ensure my finances to support my children. However, for many years, I have been quietly preparing for that day of “retirement”. I advise everyone to be like me, prepare for their future so that they do not fall into difficulties when that day comes.

I prepared for the fact that even if I didn’t sing, I would still have a job that would provide me with enough money to support and take care of my children. I built a farm as a homestay, co-founded a wall paint brand, opened a paint store, produced the Windy Hill series… all to ensure my retirement.

I am a hard-working, diligent and creative person. Therefore, I always have new jobs and developments when I leave the stage. I may even become my daughter's manager in the future. Baby Nghe sings very well. I am confident that no one can manage my daughter better than me. I will be a show producer, take care of the media, and support my daughter to become a star in the future.

- Everyone knows that business is not easy. It seems like you started your business late, but artists are often very ambitious. Are you worried about success or failure?

My friends often encourage me with this sentence: "If others can do it, I can do it too." I think that if I work with enthusiasm, with the highest effort, with conscience and responsibility, everything will be successful. And in reality, I am a person who never gives up on my ideas.

When I cherish doing something, I always have to do it and I always succeed. Maybe in terms of material value, it is not big compared to others. But for me, like the music nights Doi Gio Sing, the financial income is not a few hundred million, but only 10 million, 20 million for me is already a success because I have realized the idea I came up with. Up to now, I have never been defeated by any idea.

- Are you satisfied with your current life?

Compared to everyone else, I am extremely happy because life has given me so many good things. I was born to my parents, given a singing voice, although I am not handsome, I am still loved by many audiences. Thanks to my singing voice, thanks to my thrift, I have the things I love now and have a stable life. Especially, I have many good friends beside me, everyone loves me and is willing to help me, creating favorable conditions for my dreams.

In early 2023, a friend promised me full rights to use a 10,000m2 plot of land on the condition that it be used for a meaningful purpose. That is to build a nursing home for lonely artists in difficult circumstances, as I have long dreamed of. If I can do it, I believe that many lonely and difficult artists will no longer have to rely on appeals or charity performances that expect the audience to help them.

In my heart, I always think that the responsibility of artists is to love and protect each other and those who are in difficult circumstances will always have the hands of those in the profession to help first. When I am a show producer for an art program, I always want to be paid a higher salary for my co-stars than other show producers outside.

Because I am an artist, I understand and respect artists very much. Now I pray that God will give me health so that I can fulfill this wish. If I can do that, my life will be truly fulfilled.
